Michael Brooks

CBA Scholar Michael Brooks is a May 2016 graduate of Creighton Preparatory High School.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha College of Business Administration Scholars Academy is a close-knit community of ambitious, high-achieving business students who want to challenge themselves while pursuing a degree.

Throughout the four years in the program, Scholars are mentored by business professionals in the Omaha community, enroll in special business courses taught by award-winning faculty, and gain real-world experience through community engagement and international travel.

Scholars are selected the spring of their senior year of high school after a rigorous and competitive application process.

Meet Michael Brooks, of Omaha, Nebraska, a member of the 2016 Cohort.

Why did you choose UNO?

My choice for UNO came down to not only the affordability but also the academic prestige of the Scholars Academy.

Why did you choose business as a major?

Ever since I entered high school, I participated in speech and debate. One of the events was called Congress. I researched topics on both domestic and international scale and then would debate other students from various schools. I always enjoyed reading about international policy and how corporations would function, especially those that have their corporate headquarters located in another country.

What business concentration are you planning to pursue? Why?

I am planning on pursuing international business because of the passion I found in researching the interactions between the same company in different countries. My uncle also pursued this and has shared some of his experiences with me about his job, and it seems amazing.

What aspect of the Scholars Academy are you most looking forward to?

I am most looking forward to the internships and doors the Scholars Academy will open. Ever since I took a tour of the new business complex and Ms. Bethany Hughes talked about the perks of the Scholars Academy, what has fascinated me the most is the opportunity for internships, which will make me more prepared for my future job.

What do you like to do in your free time?

My favorite thing to do in my free time is play basketball. Ever since I was a kid, I always found a second home on the court, whether I was good or not. It always helped me relax and also helped me meet some of my best friends.

What is one thing we would be surprised to know about you?

One thing that may surprise others is the fact that I am battling cancer. I have been fighting a myofibroblastic tumor for almost eight years. It is located in my shoulder and has hindered some physical activities such as football. However, it has helped me open my eyes more and even participate in volunteer service work, such as being the leader of Omaha's youth Relay for Life.
