Justin Oehm

CBA junior Justin Oehm is studying accounting and business finance.

OMAHA – Sports enthusiast Justin Oehm won’t miss a single Saltdogs game this summer.

He’s not spectating. Rather, he’s one of 12 interns who work behind the scenes, juggling jobs such as guest relations, ticket sales and stadium operations at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Oehm, a Lincoln native, is studying accounting and business finance at the UNO College of Business Administration.

He shares more about his work at the ballpark and post-graduation plans.

What are your job duties?

During non-game days, we prepare promotional and marketing strategies for upcoming games. We are also in charge of making ticket sales and performing other operational tasks as needed, such as tours and ticket deliveries.

During game days, the 12 interns are in charge of four main areas: guest relations, ticket office, promotions and stadium operations. Guest relations consists of providing customer service to fans. Ticket office consists selling tickets to fans. Promotions consists of conducting on-the-field games and promotions throughout the game. Stadium operations consists of setting up tables, chairs and kid zone areas, and conducting any other operational tasks as needed.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I enjoy coming to the ballpark every day and learning about how a professional baseball team operates. My favorite part is coming to work and not knowing what I might do that day. The variety of jobs keeps me on my toes and focused throughout the day.

How does your job relate to your coursework in CBA?

Although this internship doesn't necessarily relate to my major, it provides me with real-world experience. The promotional aspect relates to CBA’s core marketing class, while guest relations relates to management and communication classes. My managerial communications class relates the most to this internship because of the different communication that occurs in the workplace.

What are your career goals? How is CBA helping you achieve them?

After I graduate, I would like to go on to graduate school and earn my MBA. From there, I plan to take the CPA exam and become a Certified Public Accountant. CBA is helping me achieve this goal by providing strong academic classes with great professors. CBA also does a great job of providing many student organizations to grow our personal networks.

What are you doing for fun this summer?

One of my favorite things to do during the summer is go to the lake with friends and family. I enjoy tubing, waterskiing, and riding jet skis. It will be fun to relax and catch up with friends.
