Intellectual Wellness

  1. UNO
  2. Wellness
  3. Campus Recreation
  4. Intellectual Wellness

Intellectual Wellness involves engaging our curiosity to learn, find creative solutions, think critically, and open ourselves up to new ideas.

Intellectual Wellness recognizes that learning is an end goal, rather than just a stop along the destination to a degree or desired occupation. Intellectual wellness challenges us to be lifelong learners, who view setbacks as opportunities for future development. Intellectual wellness is understanding that everyone learns and retains information differently, so focus on study habits that best support your learning.
AT Miller leading Symposium.
Taricka Burton and Sierra Roseby speaking at event.

Why is Intellectual Wellness Important?

Your brain is a muscle. Continuing to challenge yourself and seeking out opportunities for knowledge can improve cognition. Learning and engaging with the world around us can lead to a fulfilling, well-rounded life. Seeking out opportunities to engage with thoughts, beliefs, and values other than our own can help us to become more open-minded and accepting of those around us. Lastly, focused learning can lead to improved concentration and memory.

Self Check-In

  1. Are you aware of available campus resources to help you study?
  2. Do you seek personal growth by learning new skills?
  3. Do you look for ways to use creativity and critical thinking skills?
  4. Do you learn about different topics that interest you from sources other than social media?

For any of the above questions that you answered no to, try to make that an area of focus to improve your Intellectual Wellness. If you have answered no to multiple, you may want to have this dimension be a top priority in order to benefit your overall wellbeing.

Where to start?

  • Take our self check-in to assess your intellectual wellness! A great place to begin is first to understand where you are in terms of your intellectual wellness.
  • Stay curious and explore new questions and ideas as they come to you.
  • Read books and articles for fun, not just for work!
  • Take courses outside your area of expertise.
  • Get enough sleep! Adults, on average, need seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Sleep plays a crucial role in memory and our ability to retain information. You are more likely to retain what you learned if you are getting enough sleep.
  • Practice active listening and participate in discussions.
  • Take advantage of conferences or symposiums happening on campus or locally.
  • Check out opportunities for professional development in Bridge!
