To the Class of 2020,

It goes without saying that each of you, like the hundreds of thousands of new college graduates across the country, are about to graduate and transition into a world of unknowns. Today, I ask you not to dwell on these uncertainties, but celebrate three unshakable truths:

First, each of you has made it through a generational challenge with a degree from what I know to be one of the finest, most unique universities in the country. Into your degree went years of late-night study sections, lectures, and labs; and out of it came a lifetime’s worth of experiences and friendships that will support you no matter what the future brings your way.

The second truth is that a lifetime of fulfillment awaits you because of all that you have accomplished. At UNO, it is our mission to create lifelong learners, because when you approach life as a someone who sees each day as an opportunity to learn something new and grow, there is a richness and depth added to your life that will continue to fulfill, replenish, and sustain you.

Lastly, the Maverick Spirit that led you to UNO remains with you today and will follow you for the rest of your life. The grit, determination, curiosity, fearlessness, and individualism that made you the person you are today can never be taken away from you. In fact, our network of more than 100,000 Maverick alumni will continue to support you and your Maverick ways in the years to come.

As we reflect on the time we’ve spent together and prepare to pursue our next opportunities, I want to thank you for the example you have set for all future Mavericks, for making the world a better place as a lifelong learner, and for growing the Maverick Spirit. I know each of you will go on to live truly exceptional lives.

And remember; once a Maverick, always a Maverick.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D.

Chancellor
