UNO School of Communication Hosts High School Media Conference

Omaha Bryan, Millard West, Marian High, and Mount Michael Benedictine high schools received top honors in a media contest held annually by the University of Nebraska Omaha School of Communication.

Omaha Bryan, Millard West, Marian High, and Mount Michael Benedictine high schools received top honors in a media contest held annually by the University of Nebraska Omaha School of Communication.

The awards were presented April 17 during the High School Media Conference at the Scott Conference Center. School of Communication faculty members, graduate teaching assistants and capstone course students served as contest judges. The conference featured workshops for area high school students.

Omaha Central High School was the Division A first place Best Newspaper winner for The Register. Second place was awarded to Omaha Westside for The Lance and third place went to Omaha North High Magnet for The North Star.

Omaha Marian High School won first place for the Best Newspaper Division B for The Network. Second place was awarded to The Voice from Gretna and third place went to The Mount from Mount Michael Benedictine.

Omaha Bryan High School won first place in the Division A Sweepstakes Award for accumulating the most points across all print, photo and graphic categories. Second place went to Millard West and third place to Papillion-La Vista South.

Omaha Marian High School won first place in the Division B Sweepstakes Award, followed by Mount Michael Benedictine in second and Fremont in third.

Millard West won first place in the Excellence in Broadcasting Award, followed by Westside High school in second and OPS Career Center in third.

Dr. Sherrie Wilson, School of Communication, associate professor, Journalism and Media Communication division coordinator and internship coordinator, was presented with the first annual Outstanding Service Award for her work in coordinating the High School Media Conference from 1998-2017. In future years, this award will be presented to one area high school media adviser annually.

Sponsors included the Nebraska Broadcasters Association, UNO Undergraduate Admissions and the UNO Bookstore.
