Major Microsoft Migration Kicks Off at UNO May 19

All UNO Microsoft 365 users will move to a new cloud-based system as part of an NU System-wide effort to modernize digital collaboration.

Major tech changes are coming to the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) this summer. Here’s everything you need to know to ensure a smooth transition.

➡️ What’s happening:

  • UNO is joining the entire University of Nebraska (NU) System in the Future Ready Cloud Collaboration Workspace to unify Microsoft 365 across the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Lincoln, Omaha, and the Office of the President. UNMC is not in scope for this project at this time.

  • UNO’s migration begins May 19 and will run through early August.

📝 What to expect: This project affects everyone at UNO. Here are three things to expect during the migration:

  • TrueYou Username: After your migration, you'll use your TrueYou Username in the format NUID@nebraska.edu to log in to Office 365, SAP/Firefly, university computers, and certain departmental apps.

  • Email: Your email address won’t change during or after the migration. If you currently use multiple accounts, all your messages will land in one inbox, but you’ll send from your primary address. During the transition, emails internal to the NU System will appear as @nebraska.edu. All external sending and receiving of emails will continue to be your @unomaha.edu address. After the UNO migration is complete, all internal and external emails will be your @unomaha.edu as they are today.

  • Shared Links: After migration, shared links from OneDrive and SharePoint will no longer work and must be re-created and reshared. Folder-level permissions in SharePoint will migrate, but external users will need to be granted access during the transition period.

👍 Project benefits: Once the migration is complete, UNO users can expect:

  • Seamless Collaboration: Faculty, staff, and students across campuses will be able to collaborate more effectively on a single Microsoft 365 platform, eliminating the need for multiple accounts or logins.

  • Future-Ready Tools: Access to advanced technologies like Microsoft Copilot Chat AI and Teams Phone to support productivity and innovation.

  • Secure Storage Solutions: Compliant storage options through OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams for research and collaborative projects.

  • Improved Cybersecurity: Unified accounts and sign-ins will enhance security while maintaining individual campus email identities.

🗓️ Migration Timeline:

  • May 19-June 12: Non-academic departments

  • June 16-18: College of Communication, Fine Arts, and Media

  • June 19: Criss Library

  • June 23-30: College of Public Affairs and Community Service

  • July 7-10: College of Business Administration

  • July 9-10: College of Information Science and Technology

  • July 14-21: College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences

  • July 18-21: Athletics

  • July 22-31: College of Arts and Sciences

  • Early August: All students

🎤 What they’re saying:

  • NU System President Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D.: “This effort reflects our commitment to wise resource stewardship and innovative collaboration. It ensures that our University is ready to lead in the next era of teaching, research, and engagement.”

  • Bret Blackman, Vice President and Chief Information Officer for the NU System: “This is about more than technology—it’s about building a more connected and future-ready University of Nebraska. By unifying Microsoft 365, we’re eliminating barriers to collaboration, improving productivity, and better preparing our campuses to leverage cutting-edge technologies, including AI tools like Microsoft Copilot.”

🤝 Support Resources: You'll receive targeted emails from “Future Ready Workspace Project” starting 30 days before your migration, with reminders one week out and day-of Migrations begin at 6 P.M. Need help? You’ve got options:

  • Onsite support: NU ITS and your college or unit IT team

  • Zoom Help Room: Tuesday through Friday, 8-10:30 A.M.: https://its.nebraska.edu/tacroom

  • MavTech Help Center Phone: 402.554.4357

  • NU System Support Email: nusupport@nebraska.edu

📚 Faculty Focus: If you link to SharePoint files in Canvas, this Microsoft365 project will impact those links. The Digital Learning Team has already begun reaching out to UNO faculty who choose this course design option, and our Instructional Designers and Technologists will partner with faculty to assist in identifying and updating links in Canvas, as needed, to make sure your summer and fall classes are ready to go!

  • Onsite support: Find the Digital Learning team on 3rd floor, Criss Library

  • Zoom Help Room: the same Digital Learning Zoom drop-in room UNO faculty have been accustomed to using since 2020 is open Monday through Friday, 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. to assist. To access the Digital Learning Zoom drop-in room for faculty, login to Canvas, click "help" in the main left-hand tray, and choose the second option labeled "UNO Digital Learning Team Virtual Drop-In Support."

  • UNO Digital Learning Team Support Email: uno.its.digitallearning@unomaha.edu.
