  • Photography Guidelines

Since video involves a multitude of images and sound, it is important that a video created to represent or promote the university be clearly identified as a UNO production.

Branding in Video

Typeface and color of the graphics must be consistent with approved branding guidelines. Videos that use incorrect or outdated brand elements should not be posted online or on social media channels.

Avoid using references to “University of Nebraska at Omaha” and use “UNO” when possible.

Brand Approval

All videos created on behalf of UNO must be sent to UComm at unophotos@unomaha.edu for final approval on the use of UNO marks before the video is finalized and published. This is why it's important to keep UComm updated throughout the process, as it will cut down on possible edits on the back end.

Video Brand Guidelines

Font & Weight

Use only URW Grotesk typeface (light, regular, or medium weight).

If your video vendor needs access to our typefaces, they will need to purchase their own license to our university typefaces at myfonts.com/fonts/urw/grotesk.

Title Slide & Closing Slide

Opening Animation & Closing Slide

Files for both the opening animation and closing slide are available for download. We have provided a generic opening animation as well as openers for each college. You will also find a closing slide with the UNO lockup.

  • You are welcome to create your own opening animation or closing slide/animation as long as they follow the UNO brand guidelines and are submitted for review prior to publication.
  • The files available for download do NOT need to be included in full as extra time has been added at the end to allow for transitions in the editing process.

Download the Opening Animation & Closing Slide Graphics. Simply add these files to your project and maintain their positions to stay on brand.

Access the College Intros for college-specific opening animations.

Bug: Campus Icon

The Campus Icon Bug should appear in the lower right corner of your video in order to maintain a UNO brand throughout the project.

Download the Campus Icon Bug Template and add this file to the top layer of your video editing timeline and it will show up in the correct position on screen.

Lower Third Identification Graphics

The lower third identification graphic, better known as just the lower third, is an area of the screen that is commonly used to display contextual information, such as a person’s name, a location, or some other pertinent information.

The lower third identification graphic, better known as just the lower third, is an area of the screen that is commonly used to display contextual information, such as a person’s name, a location, or some other pertinent information.

Download the Lower Third ID Template, edit your text, and add the file to your video editing timeline. If you maintain the pre-set positioning, font, and text size, you’ll stay on brand.

Title Bar Structure

ID Headings

ID Headings should clearly identify the name, place, or event represented in the video.

  • Use full first and last name.
  • Use full name with middle name or initial upon request of the interviewee.

Refer to the Writing Style Guide for guidelines on academic titles.

ID Subheadings

ID Subheadings are used to provide additional information about the person, place, or event represented in the video including title, department, college, company, or graduation year.

Keep the subheading as simple as possible. Never use more than one line for a subheading in this lower third. Avoid lengthy subheadings.

Internal UNO Administrators, Faculty, and Staff

  • Administrators, Faculty, and Staff subheadings display Full Title, Department / College
  • If the “Full Title, Department / College” format is too lengthy or unreadable, use “University of Nebraska at Omaha” for the “Department / College” portion of the subheading.

Students & Alumni

  • Students subheadings display “University of Nebraska at Omaha” with abbreviated college.
  • Student worker subheadings display
  • Student athletes use the format “Omaha Men’s/Women’s Sport” with abbreviated college. Do not use the player position or the word “Team.”
  • Alumni subheadings display the job title in “job title, company” format, followed by the abbreviated college and graduation year.

Community Members Outside of UNO

  • Community Member subheadings display “Full Title, Department / College / Company”
  • When the full title is not pertinent to the narrative, use formats indicating the community member's relationship to UNO or simply their location.

Single Line

Use a single line ID for establishing a place, a montage, a series of images, or a multi-step process. This may include establishing shots that need to be identified (“Omaha, NE”), a description of a shot, a series of shots, or a montage (“Milo Bail Student Center”), a description of a sequence (i.e. “Step 1” / “Step 2” / “Step 3”), and very rarely, a name ID with no subheading

  • Keep the descriptions simple. Avoid using the entire line.
  • Name specific places. Do not abbreviate. (e.g. Milo Bail Student Center)
  • With U.S. cities, use state abbreviations. (e.g. New York, NY)
  • With international cities, use the full title. (e.g. Buenos Aires, Argentina)
  • Never use more than one line for this lower third.

Archiving & Sharing Final Video

Once a project is approved, the original file of the final video should be given to University Communications for archiving and sharing prior to publication.

Please contact unophotos@unomaha.edu for instruction on transferring original files.

Guidelines

  1. Vendors shall provide the original file, not a link to it on their platform. Having the original file will allow UNO to share the file through its various channels without compromising quality.
  2. Original videos files must be archived and stored on Box before they are shared.
  3. University Communications prefers to host approved videos on the university’s main YouTube Channel. Videos created on behalf of the university shall never be hosted on personal channels (e.g. personal social media accounts or YouTube channels). Centralizing UNO’s video content makes it easier for people to learn about the wide variety of events, programs, research, community engagement, and educational activities in which UNO faculty and staff are involved.
  4. Departments, programs, and other business units can embed the YouTube code for each video into the content area of their websites.

If you need assistance with archiving, hosting, sharing, or embedding video, please contact the Office of University Communications at unophotos@unomaha.edu.
