Why is Occupational Wellness Important?
Occupational burn-out is becoming a new phenomenon in the workplace. Burn-out occurs as a result of chronic stress in the workplace and is characterized by feelings of exhaustion, feelings of negativity or cynicism related to one’s job, and reduced self-confidence in ability to effectively perform job duties. Chronic stress can negatively impact our mental and physical health, both in the short-term and long-term. In the short-term, chronic stress can contribute to shortness of breath, heartburn, and headaches. In the long-term, chronic stress can contribute to hearth disease, obesity, and diabetes. Creating healthy boundaries within the workplace can contribute to reduced stress and overall life satisfaction. A balanced work-life involves having time and emotional capacity to do the activities that bring you joy and enrich your life overall.

- Do you strive to develop good work habits (dependability, initiative, communication, etc.)?
- Have you participated in internships or volunteer work?
- Do you have confidence in your job searching skills?
For any of the above questions that you answered no to try to make that an area of focus to improve your Occupational Wellness. If you have answered no to multiple, you may want to have this dimension be a top priority in order to benefit your overall wellbeing.

- Find your people at work, individuals who help you find joy and meaning.
- Don’t be afraid to make a change.
Resources to support your journey
- UNO has contracted with Best Care Employee Assistance Program to provide confidential counseling and referral services to all UNO Staff and Full-time Faculty, and their eligible dependents.
- Who is elligible? All UNO staff (regardless of full-time or part-time status), full-time Faculty, as well as the President’s office can receive assistance and counseling provided through the FSEAP.

Best Care services are provided by UNO and available to you at no cost. The program provides five (5) counseling sessions for you and your eligible dependent family members. Some situations may require the use of ongoing or specialized support.
In this case, your Best Care counselor will work with you to find the most appropriate and cost-effective resource. Any fees related to using that resource then become your responsibility.
