IPD Module Descriptions

The following module descriptions give participants the information about what they are selecting whether they take the Global Leadership and Communication Program or choose any combination of modules as stand-alone or a la carte options.

Effective Listening and Speaking for Professionals

This course offers IPD participants the opportunity to strategically improve the ability to listen to, speak, and understand English, particularly in professional contexts. International participants’ listening and speaking skills will have an ESL focus.


Pronunciation for Professionals

International participants whose native language is not English will practice English pronunciation to help them to be better understood and to be able to recognize sounds in order to improve their listening and speaking skills.


Principles and Practices of 21st Century Leaders

Explore the core characteristics and the vocabulary of business of effective leaders and learn how to apply them. Through examining real-world cases, listening to speakers, completing questionnaires, and engaging in active role-play, participants learn the practices of effective business leaders and how to apply them to professional and organizational goals.


Management for Business Professionals

Study fundamental skills, best practices, and business terminology for successful management in today's complex global business environment. Participants examine recognized management theories and related practical applications in an international context. Strengths and weaknesses of each theory are discussed and applied to individual company case studies.


Public Speaking: Corporate Connections, Research, Interviewing, and Networking and Public Speaking: Presentations Skills for Global Business

Identify the framework and receive the practical coaching necessary to help project a confident, positive and credible image when giving business presentations. Participants will have the opportunity to view and analyze their existing presentation method as well as their progress during the course through digital recordings.

Class objectives also include preparing presentation slides in English, strategies for overcoming anxiety, using body language to facilitate understanding, managing the question and answer session, and preparing for the capstone project.


Global Communication: Exploring and Comparing Cultural Concepts and Communication Strategies for Professionals

Expand the intercultural business awareness critical for success in a global environment. GBC examines the cultural, attitudinal, and behavioral differences that affect intercultural communication in the English language and how to manage them.

Through discussion and role-play, participants gain insight into how to communicate effectively with business associates from different cultures.


The Highly Successful Leaders Book Club

IPD participants will develop a framework for an optimal reading strategy using popular and proven books on leadership. Participants will examine the importance of a dynamic reading process, using authentic business or leadership texts to expand their vocabulary, and apply these dynamic reading skills to improve comprehension, retention (memory), and speed.


Effective Business Writing for Professionals

Learn to communicate effectively by increasing English writing abilities in a variety of business situations. Learn to produce polished business documents that are concise, clear, and professional.

Participants will prepare a number of different documents such as professional introductions, e-mails, memos, letters, reports, and business plans. International participants’ writing skills will have an ESL focus.

IPD Optional Modules for Corporate and Individual Participants

The following customized courses can either be added to the standard program or taken during available times in the schedule during Omaha time (CST) at an additional charge. Please contact us if you are interested in one or more additional modules.

Gallup Strengths Finder with Coaching

Gain an understanding and apply leadership principals and qualities according to the Clifton Strengths Finder. This module includes coaching to understand your strengths and how to apply them.

TOEIC Test Preparation Course

Test-taking strategies and practice for international participants needing to take the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)

One-on-One Private Coaching / Mentoring

A coach provides a participant with direction and help to resolve issues; revise or shape the program in process to meet participant needs; communicate and provide feedback on questions about research, communication strategies, networking, presentations, interviews, meetings, reports; answer questions; etc., on a weekly basis

One-on-One with the Chamber of Commerce/Nebraska Business Development Center/Kiwanis/Young Professionals Member

Access to business professionals to facilitate international networking connections for a participant and/or their company

Corporate Guest Speaker

A speaker presents and answers questions on a business topic of interest being discussed during training

Private English Session

One-on-one professional help for international participants with further English explanation and practice of exercises/topics covered in course

Conversation Partner Sessions

Informal English conversation about various topics selected by the participant

Kiwanis’ or Young Professionals’ Meeting

Access to business professionals for informal networking connections and, for international participants, practicing English

Additional Leadership/Management Training (arranged and approved by IPD Director eight weeks before the course begins for corporate clients only)

Negotiation; Professional Style; Selling Yourself: Resume Content and Networks; Fundraising and Grant Writing; Business Protocol/Etiquette; Conflict Resolution Practices (interfacing with clients); Corporate Research Practices (business or civic practices)/Team Building Exercises; Business Book Club Discussion; etc.

Additional Global Communication Skills (arranged and approved by IPD Director eight weeks before course begins for corporate clients only)

Business Writing: General; Business Writing: Email (form, style, and etiquette); Business Writing: Professional (reports, proposals, or other); Intercultural Communications; Cross-Cultural Communication; Resume Writing; Listening; Writing; Reading; Vocabulary; etc.

Interactive Classes

IPD classes are small, rarely more than eight professionals, and instructors encourage participants to interact so that they can learn from one another and practice English skills in a realistic environment.
