Employee Leave and Student Serviceship Programs

New civil and disaster leave programs and student serviceship opportunities have been added to the University of Nebraska’s flood response efforts as the NU campuses continue to develop a coordinated, long-term plan to support those impacted by the recent natural disaster.

The programs will open new service opportunities for employees and students interested in volunteering in affected communities or supporting colleagues in need.

“Nebraska has been the university’s home for 150 years. Particularly in times of need, we take seriously our role to serve our state,” the president and chancellors wrote to faculty, staff and students, thanking members of the NU community who have been eager to help in the recovery efforts.

“We will be a partner as Nebraska rebuilds, however long it takes.”

The Red Cross

The Red Cross is currently accepting full-day volunteers at various shelters. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for shifts online.

If you do plan to volunteer, here are some important items to keep in mind:

  • Volunteers should be prepared to serve from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

  • Upon completion of your Volunteer Connection profile you will be asked to upload your state ID and go through a background check (this will take about 30 seconds).

  • Once completed and submitted you will be notified by the Red Cross with further details concerning your volunteering assignment.

  • Sign-up at least 24 hours prior to your desired day volunteering to be able to complete these steps.

University of Nebraska Emergency Assistance Fund

The University of Nebraska Emergency Assistance Fund enables the university to help currently enrolled students and current university employees who face financial hardship resulting from emergency or crisis situations such as natural disasters, home displacement and food insecurity. These circumstances include the 2019 flooding that has significantly affected people and the state.

The University of Nebraska Emergency Assistance Fund relies on contributions from individuals, companies and organizations who wish to help with this assistance program. Every gift helps, and when combined with the donations of others, will provide the help a student or employee needs when facing the unexpected.

Based on need, aid from the fund is awarded by the president of the University of Nebraska. For information about applying for assistance, contact the university at NUEmergencyFund@nebraska.edu or call 402.472.2111.

Thank you for your care and thoughtfulness for the University of Nebraska community members who may need assistance at this time. Please begin your secure online gift below.

If you prefer to mail a gift, please make your check payable to the University of Nebraska Foundation and send it to: NU Emergency Assistance Fund, University of Nebraska Foundation, PO Box 82555, Lincoln NE 68501-2555. Please include NU Emergency Assistance Fund on the check or enclose this with your gift.
