Honoring A Legacy
From the lecture halls to the highest office of UNO, Chancellor Emeritus John E. Christensen’s journey was one of profound dedication, vision, and service.
His story is one of extraordinary dedication and deep-rooted connection to Omaha and UNO. As a first-generation student, he walked the very same paths at UNO as generations of learners, earning his Master of Science in Special Education/Speech Pathology. At UNO, he found his purpose.
He was a dedicated faculty member, known for his focus on students, and unwavering support for academic excellence. Rising from instructor to chair to dean, he led with quiet strength and heartfelt dedication, always placing the growth of students and faculty at the center of every decision — no matter how hard the choice might be.
His journey from classroom to chancellorship was marked by unwavering commitment to education, tireless service to the campus community, and a vision that elevated the university to new heights. As a leader, mentor, and lifelong advocate for learning, he leaves behind a legacy built on compassion, excellence, and a profound love for the place he always called home.
Receiving the honor of Chancellor Emeritus, he said, “Having been named Chancellor Emeritus is a lifetime honor for me personally. This recognition; however, is a reflection of the Mavericks Family commitment to servicing kids and community which has transitioned UNO for the future.”
With humility and a deep commitment to education, Chancellor Emeritus Christensen became not only a guiding force for the university but also a symbol of what it means to believe in the transformative power of learning. His legacy is etched into the heart of this campus and will continue to inspire for generations to come.
"His warmth, humility and deep commitment to students defined his tenure and continue to inspire those of us privileged to follow in his footsteps."
— Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold, University of Nebraska system president
