Purpose/Goals of the Three-Week January Session

Students spoke about four major goals for the Three-Week January session:

  • Experiential learning opportunities (study abroad, internships, field placement, clinical work, practica, service learning, lab/studio work, etc.)
  • Catch-up courses or "get ahead" courses (i.e.: getting ahead in gen ed, course re-takes, or remediation courses)
  • Enrichment courses outside one’s degree requirements
  • Increased flexibility in spring, which also allows students to stay on track for 30 SCH/year

Three Week January Session Information

The Three-Week January session will be held between January 3 and January 20, 2023. Most courses are taught online, while others focus on experiential learning. Please consider the pace of the courses before enrolling in a three-week session course as:

  • Your course will be at an accelerated pace. Contact the course instructor for more information on what that means for you.
  • Attendance and participation will be critical to your success as there are limited class meetings. Make sure you have the time to commit to the entire three-week session.
  • Your spring financial aid may be used for a January session. More information here.
  • Three-week session courses will fill up quickly or may be canceled due to low enrollments, so you should enroll early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I required to take a class in the Three-Week January Session?

Three-Week January session classes are not required for students, so you could take courses in the fall semester and resume in spring, and be considered "re-enrolled."

How many credits can I take during the Three-Week January session?

We encourage students to limit their enrollment to 3 credits during this session. Students are allowed to enroll for 18 credits during the standard Spring term (January 23-May 19).

If I take one class during this Three-Week period, does it count towards spring semester enrollment for full-time status?

Three-Week January session classes count toward full-time status in the spring.

How will I be billed for a Three-Week January session class?

Because the three-week session remains a part of the spring term, there is no need to change our billing schedule. Our normal schedule for spring billings begins the last working day in January. We do not want to bill for this session before financial aid has an opportunity to post to accounts which will happen in mid-January. Our current end-of-January billing date fits that schedule.

How will fees be charged for the Three-Week January session?

Students will be assessed course-related student fees (fees assessed per credit, such as Distance Education, Technology, Research, and Library fees) in addition to laboratory/trip fees according to normal policy.

Flat fees such as UPF, Student Access, and Success, Cultural Enrichment, and MavCARD will be assessed only if the student is enrolled in spring term courses in addition to the Three-Week January session.

Three-Week January session credits will be included in the calculation to determine the level of UPF to assess for the spring term if Three-Week January session credits qualify for UPF and the student is also enrolled in spring term classes.

Will Financial Aid cover my Three-Week January session costs?

Spring disbursement would occur on or around January 16th. This is our normal practice for spring semester disbursement, about one week prior to spring semester classes starting. We would not make any earlier financial aid disbursements for students enrolled in the Three-Week January session.

Since they can only take up to 3 credit hours, students would not reach half-time enrollment until the regular spring semester. We also would not change the financial aid Pell Recalculation Date. It would remain as the last day to withdraw from the regular spring semester and get a 100% refund. So, if a student enrolls in a Three-Week January session, but withdraws, the student would not be eligible for financial aid for that Three-Week January session withdrawn course. Cost of Attendance adjustments (and additional offers of aid) for Three-Week January session enrollment would occur in Nov/Dec.

When will I get my financial aid?

Spring disbursement would occur on or around January 16th. This is our normal practice for spring semester disbursement, about 1 week prior to spring semester classes starting. We would not make any earlier financial aid disbursements for students enrolled in the Three-Week January session. Since they can only take up to 3 credit hours, students would not reach half-time enrollment until the regular spring semester.

When do I order textbooks for the Three-Week January session classes?

Books in the bookstore will be stocked for the Three-Week January session at the same time as all books are stocked for spring classes.
