Emily Martin and Emily Yowell attended the IMA Student Leadership Conference

Mammel Hall – Two UNO College of Business Administration School of Accounting students recently attended the IMA (Institute of Management Accountants) Student Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California, November 7-November 9, sponsored by the IMA MEF (Memorial Education Fund).

Emily Yowell and Emily Martin met with industry professionals and had access to presentations and discussions from leading experts on the current trends and developments in accounting and finance.

The students say the experience was very helpful for them in deciding the next steps for their careers.

“Learning about a career in the IRS CI (criminal investigation). I have always been interested in working in forensic accounting, but I didn’t know if I wanted to work for the FBI, CIA, or IRS, but the IRS grabbed my attention (at the conference),” said Yowell. “I also enjoyed listening to the 20 Thoughts for 20 Years presentation by Eric Lenard, CMA, CFM. It was inspiring to hear about the struggles he has had in his career, how he has overcome these challenges, and how he is actively pursuing a healthier lifestyle in a stressful career.”

School of Accounting faculty say it is important to be able to send students to events like these and give them a head start on their career paths.

“As an IMA Endorsed School, the UNO School of Accounting students greatly benefited from the IMA MEF Grant to attend a very inspiring and informative Student Leadership Conference. In addition, seven UNO School of Accounting students have received the IMA CMA Scholarships in the last year. IMA’s investment in creating awareness about the accounting profession and accounting education in a holistic manner is impactful in inspiring the next generation of accountants,” said Dr. Roopa Venkatesh, Director of the CBA School of Accounting and Union Pacific Professor of Accounting.
