Some UNO Ensembles require an entrance audition in order to participate. Auditions are held each year during the week before classes begin in August. Excerpts are posted in July of each year.

UNO Athletic Bands

If you are interested in performing with the "Maverick Machine" pep band or Maverick Winter Guard, please visit the UNO Bands webpage for further information. These groups will hold separate auditions after the academic year begins. Please contact Dr. Joshua Kearney (jskearney@unomaha.edu) with specific questions regarding the concert and athletic band program.

AUDITION DESCRIPTION

Auditions for the 2025-2026 UNO choirs will take place in person in SPAC 219.

Your in-person audition will consist of the following:

1. Sing the melody (soprano line) to “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” (F major, Though you may be asked to sing the melody at a higher or lower key depending on your voice part)

2. A few exercises to assess your sight-reading skills, tonal memory, and vocal range. This material will be provided during the audition.

Please arrive 10 minutes early to your scheduled audition time. Before entering your audition, there will be a paper form to fill out that you will hand to the director.

All students enrolled in voice lessons as well as all vocal and choral majors must complete an audition.

For those interested in Concert Choir, there will be a Callback which will take place on Sunday, August 24th, from 5pm-7:30pm. More information regarding the Callbacks will be giving after one's initial audition.

Percussion Auditions

Audition material for non-majors and incoming first years & sophomores.

  • All of the Sonatina on marimba, all of étude 17 on snare drum, and just étude 50 on timpani (in order of scans).

Audition material for juniors, seniors, and graduate students.

String Auditions

Music majors pursuing a BM or MM in performance/education, or a BA Music Studies degree, and all students who receive a scholarship (regardless of degree track), are required to audition for orchestra.

Non-music majors may audition for orchestra if they wish to be considered for a leadership position but are not required to audition.

Violin, viola, cello, and bass will prepare two excerpts in addition to sight-reading provided at the audition. There will be no solo piece.
