Undergraduate Degree Programs

ConductingThe University of Nebraska at Omaha contributes to the community and to the state through its strong academic programs, research and creative activity of its faculty, and through a very special orientation to public service. Through these and through the accomplishments of its graduates, UNO takes advantage of its unique role in the area and serves both students and community through relevant programs of high quality. The Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Music degrees offered by the School of Music are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Students may choose to study with talented artist-faculty in brass, woodwind, percussion, strings, keyboard, voice, or music technology. Bachelor of Music (B.M.)

Music Education

Music EducationMusic education is a major emphasis of the School of Music. A comprehensive curriculum leading toward a PK-12 teaching certificate is offered to students in all areas of music study. A unique team-taught emphasis provides students with a diversity of hands-on teaching experiences, techniques, and resources required for a successful career. Nationally recognized clinicians and educators regularly conduct clinics and workshops throughout the year offering advanced experiences in a broad spectrum of teaching situations. Students have opportunity to observe and teach in diverse school settings throughout the metropolitan area.

The Music Education degree with PK-12 Certification is currently accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) and approved by the Nebraska State Department of Education. To be formally accepted into the Educator Preparation Program, candidates must pass the Praxis® Core tests in reading, writing, and math.

The Bachelor of Music with PK-12 Certification degree allows UNO to recommend graduates for Nebraska licensure as PK-12 music teachers. In addition, candidates must pass the Praxis® II – Music: Content and Instruction (5114) with a score of 152 or higher to meet state licensure requirements.

Music Performance

TrumpetThe Bachelor of Music degree in performance involves intensive study in vocal or instrumental music and experience in a variety of performance situations. An innovative curriculum in fundamental music skills provides a solid foundation in music theory, history and analysis. Students will study with talented artist-faculty in brass, woodwinds, percussion, keyboard, or voice and will focus on the skills needed to lay a foundation for a performance career and graduate study. There are three different concentrations available in the Music Performance degree are instrumental performance, vocal performance, and music technology.

Bachelor of Arts in Music (B.A.)

Music TechnologyMusic Technology

The Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in Music Technology (BAM-MT) is a four-year degree program focusing on the technical, theoretical, and creative skills required to pursue professional careers in the growing field of music technology. Students enroll in both traditional music studies, (music theory, aural skills, keyboard studies, and ensemble performance) as well as our wide-ranging and innovative technology courses in audio recording, sound reinforcement, analog and digital synthesis, and performance with interactive electronics. The degree culminates with presentation of a capstone project, combining a student's creative, technical, theoretical, and historical knowledge. The degree is designed as a four-year course of study.

Jazz Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in Jazz is a four-year degree program that include courses in Jazz piano, arranging, improvisation, in addition to performance in an award-winning ensembles.

Music Entrepreneurial Studies

Students studying Music Entrepreneurial Studies learn the capacity and willingness to develop, organize, and manage a music business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit. Students enroll in both traditional and contemporary courses in music theory, business, and technology, as well as the fundamentals of musicianship in private lessons and ensemble performance.

Music Studies

The Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Music Studies combines the same high-quality experiences of the Bachelor of Music degree with the flexibility of more electives. This degree is a perfect fit for students who are seeking double majors in music and some other area and for the non-traditional music learner. It may fulfill the requirements for entrance into a Master of Music program; it does not provide preparation for teacher certification in music.
