Request Disability Accommodations

Academic accommodations support access to course instruction, materials, and assessments by reducing disability-related barriers. Non-academic accommodations address needs related to campus living (housing, dining, emotional support animals, etc.). Medical accommodations support students experiencing health-related challenges that may affect their ability to participate in academic activities.

Understanding Accommodations

Requesting disability accommodations is a collaborative process grounded in shared understanding, communication, and responsibility. Students should become familiar with how accommodations work including their purpose, scope, and implementation, and engage proactively in the process to support timely and effective access throughout their university experience.

Animals on Campus

Service animals and emotional support animals serve different purposes.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service animal is a dog that has been individually trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability. In limited circumstances, a trained miniature horse may also qualify as a service animal. Service animals are generally permitted in University buildings and other areas open to the public.

An emotional support animal (ESA) provides comfort or emotional support related to a disability but is not trained to perform specific tasks. Because ESAs are not considered service animals under the ADA, they are not permitted in classrooms, offices, dining facilities, or other public campus spaces. ESAs may be approved as a housing accommodation through Accessibility Services Center (ASC) and University Housing.
