Students: Getting Started
Your study abroad process is about to begin!
Please read each of these 11 steps carefully and take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions. If you have questions that cannot be answered by the information found on our website, feel free to contact us.
1 Take a look at our website
This website is an excellent tool to help you through the process of finding, applying for and completing a study abroad program. Ensure that you are eligible for study abroad and take some time to explore the information that is available. From transferring academic credit to getting a visa, you should be able to find the answers to many of your questions.
2 Get more information from a Peer Advisor
You don’t have to make an appointment to speak with one of our knowledgeable Peer Advisors. Stop by during our office hours or attend one of our weekly info sessions to learn more about studying abroad.
3 Define your goals for studying abroad
What are you hoping to get out of your international experience? Which factors are most important to you? For what duration of time will you be comfortable being away from home? Spend some time identifying your study abroad goals and priorities.
4 Research program opportunities
You can now begin searching for programs that align with your personal goals and academic needs. If you are concerned about funding your program, take a look at which programs your UNO scholarships can be applied to. While the Education Abroad Office can also assist you with identifying a suitable program, it is important to first spend time researching programs of interest on your own.
5 Meet with a member of the Education Abroad team
Set up an appointment with the Education Abroad Advisor to discuss the programs you’re interested in, the application process and all other study abroad-related questions.
6 Meet with your academic advisor
There are many academic factors to consider when planning to study abroad. Meet with your academic advisor to discuss your course approval form and how your selected program can fit into your degree. If you are early in your college career, start building your graduation plans with a study abroad experience in mind.
Check application deadlines to ensure that you submit your application and supporting documents on time. Students must complete both the online Via TRM application for approval from the UNO Education Abroad office AND an admission application directly to the program provider or host institution.
8 Make a financial plan
Check out funding options and see what financial aid and scholarships you might be eligible for. Then fill out a comprehensive budget worksheet to assess what additional funding you will need for your study abroad program.
If necessary, complete the Education Abroad Financial Support and Scholarships Form and meet with the Office of Financial Support and Scholarships to confirm what financial assistance you qualify for and how it will be disbursed.
9 Learn more!
Attend one of our Know Before You Go information sessions, focused on questions and concerns you have before you go abroad, such as how to search and apply for scholarships or what it's like to live with a host family.
See what students abroad are doing right now with the #MavsAbroad tag on social media or check out our official bloggers (and apply to be one yourself!)
10 Attend a Pre-Departure Orientation Session
The mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation is where you can learn everything you need to know before getting on the plane. This is the perfect time to ask questions and get to know other UNO students who are going abroad.
11 Make final preparations
Have you obtained a passport and a visa if your program requires it? Do you have all necessary vaccinations and prescriptions? Take a look at our pre-departure checklist to ensure that you’re completely ready to go.
Pack your bags! Your new adventure is about to begin.
