UNO Exchange Programs

Group of college students in a group hug looking happy.

Studying abroad doesn't have to be expensive! Mavericks can study abroad or away on exchange while paying tuition and fees at UNO. Explore your many options to spend a summer, semester, or academic year on exchange.

At UNO when we call a program an 'Exchange' program, it means a few things. First, it means that UNO students participating will pay a portion of their program costs at UNO instead of paying the partner university abroad. This keeps costs affordable and allows all financial aid types to be used to help students pay for the opportunity. Second, with an exchange, you are literally changing places with a student from one of our partner universities or networks. While you are abroad studying, they will come to UNO and take your place. You will pay some of the expenses for that student coming to UNO, and that student will pay some of your expenses at your school abroad. On other types of study abroad programs, students pay the actual costs of participating directly to their host university, and no one trades places with them back home. While on an exchange students get to pay the familiar costs at their home university and use all their finacial aid towards their study abroad.

UNO collects the cost of tuition, fees, and the Education Abroad Admin Cost. Billing occurs through MavLink. For UNO Exchange Partners, MAUI-Utrecht, and NSE, students pay other expenses directly (housing to host institution, local transportation pass, grocery shopping, etc.) For ISEP exchange students, UNO bills the cost of housing and meals in MavLINK in addition to tuition, fees, and our admin cost. Other expenses for ISEP students are paid by the students directly.

And yes, UNO tuition scholarships will apply to tuition costs associated with an exchange program. Please check with your scholarship provider to complete any required approval forms. Federal Financial Aid can also be used towards all exchange programs.

Exchange programs are good for students who:

  • Want an authentic experience as an international student when they study abroad
  • Are independent and want to increase their problem-solving skills
  • Feel comfortable navigating a new city and academic system without extensive assistance
  • Have UNO scholarships and want to apply them to help defray the cost of their program

Each year, 90-100% of UNO students studying abroad for a full semester or longer choose an exchange program. Students like the affordability, maximizing their financial aid and scholarships, the opportunity to integrate locally as an international student, the ability to make friends, and the many destinations available to take classes around the world.

The University of Nebraska Omaha has established relationships with other institutions which provide exchange opportunities. These special partners are schools that were chosen for their academic compatability, student support, affordability, unique locales, and are often formed by connections UNO faculty and staff have in communities abroad. Students can spend a semester, academic year, or (in five locations) a summer at these partner universities and pay UNO tuition and fees instead of paying tuition abroad. While exchanges through networks can sometimes be competitive, UNO Exchange Partners set aside a number of spaces for students from UNO each year to study with them. This means that in most locations, studying at a UNO Exchange Partner is noncompetitive and there will be space for all Mavericks wanting to participate.

ISEP is a network of hundreds of colleges and universities in 50 countries. ISEP is especially recommended for students wanting to exchange in Latin America, Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East. Students who participate in an ISEP-Exchange program are able to pay UNO tuition while earning academic credit at other institutions throughout the world. The fees students pay to UNO includes tuition, housing, and most meals at their international destination at the same rate as a semester at UNO.

ISEP also offers ISEP-Direct programs, which function as a third-party provider program and are not billed through UNO or eligible for UNO tuition scholarships.

ISEP Exchange Programs are listed in the MavsAbroad Portal by region. Students should apply through the ISEP website and select their desired schools, and then apply in the MavsAbroad Portal based on the region they have selected for study.

ISEP: The Americas

ISEP: Europe

The MAUI-UTRECHT Network Exchange Program allows students from member universities to participate in study abroad exchange programs at other member institutions in Europe for a semester or academic year. UNO students will pay UNO tuition while earning academic credit abroad. Students looking for a low-cost semester in Europe should consider MAUI-Utrecht's many opportunities in central and eastern Europe.

The National Student Exchange (NSE) is a consortium of over 170 universities in the United States and Canada. The NSE was established in 1968 and has had more than 120,000 students participate in exchanges. Students exchange for a semester or academic year and pay their tuition and fees in MavLINK while taking courses at another school in the NSE network.
