If you are a Maverick in the College of Arts and Sciences, you can study abroad.

Almost every year, the College of Arts and Sciences sends more students abroad than any other college at UNO!

What is Study Abroad?

Study Abroad is the opportunity to do some of your university studies in another country. You can go abroad for just one class or stay as long as an academic year. Most UNO students go for two weeks to one semester when they study abroad.

There are a lot of options for classes, from general education courses and electives to requirements for majors, minors, and concentrations. Programs are available for both undergraduate and graduate level students. UNO even has options to study away in different parts of the United States.

Why Should I Think About Studying Abroad?

Just like when someone decides to go to college, people choose to study abroad for many different reasons. You’ll have to consider your own goals, but here are some reasons you might consider:

  • See an academic subject from a new perspective
  • Develop valuable career skills
  • Build up your resume
  • Become more independent and self-confident
  • Increase your ability to use a second language
  • Connect with your family history
  • Explore interest in another culture
  • Experience life in a different community
  • Examine how other countries handle common issues
  • Make new friends, mentors, or professional connections
  • Grow your comfort level with differing opinions- and expressing your own
  • Deepen your understanding of U.S. culture
  • Prepare for international plans after college, like teaching abroad, Fulbright, Peace Corps, or graduate school
  • Other academic, personal, or professional reasons!

How Do I Get Started?

A great way to start is with a little exploration. The UNO Education Abroad website features lots of info about how to study abroad through UNO. Do some research in the MavsAbroad Portal, or ‘MAP’ as well. In MAP you can find all UNO’s study abroad programs and can complete a program match quiz to help narrow down your options based on your priorities and interests.

Visiting the study abroad office is also important- and you can start there if you prefer to talk it out rather than explore online first. The Education Abroad Peer Advisors are student workers you can stop by and chat with to get your initial questions answered, and they can help you set up an appointment with the Global Learning Advisor.

Through the office you can learn about the types of programs, finances and scholarships, how to select the right program for you, how to apply, and more.

Don’t forget to tell your advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences that you’re hoping to study abroad. They can help you identify the best time in your degree plan to go abroad, what courses might be a good fit for your study abroad, and help you stay on track while including a global experience.
