UNO students who are not on academic or disciplinary probation and have a minimum GPA between 2.0 and 2.5 (or higher) are eligible to study abroad. Each program has its own specific requirements, so be sure to check with your program provider or the Education Abroad Office.

Typically, the earliest students will be able to go abroad during their college career is summer of their first academic year. This allows students to fully acclimate to college life prior to navigating another country’s academic system.

Approval to study abroad is granted on a case-by-case basis. If you have questions about eligibility requirements or the recommended timeline for studying abroad, contact the Education Abroad Office.

Most students who study abroad do so during their sophomore or junior year, but students of all levels can find opportunities overseas. We recommend that you begin planning for a study abroad experience during your freshman year. Meet with an academic advisor to determine the best time to incorporate studying abroad into your degree program, and if you belong to a scholarship organization be sure to check with them on any timing restrictions as well. Programs vary in length from 10 days to a full year of study.

We offer study abroad experiences all over the world. Take a look at our programs and search our program database in the MavsAbroad Portal to begin exploring your options. UNO even offers programs across the United States through the National Student Exchange.

Costs vary greatly depending on the program, but we will help you find a study abroad option that fits your budget. Find out more about costs and funding here.

Absolutely! We encourage students to begin studying abroad early in their college career so they have time to take advantage of multiple overseas opportunities.

Start by visiting the Education Abroad Office and speaking with a Peer Advisor or searching in the MavsAbroad Portal. Ask yourself some important questions like: when do I want to go abroad, for how long, what type of classes do I want to take, where would I like to go, what will my identity be like abroad and what do I want to get out of the experience? When you're ready, contact the office to schedule an appointment with one or our advisors. Our advisors will help you finish selecting a program and guide you through the study abroad process from start to finish.

Applications are submitted in the same place where you search for programs- the MavsAbroad Portal (MAP). This is also where you will return to submit required pre-departure forms after you are accepted to a program.

Of course! Most programs offer some courses in English, and several international universities use English as the teaching language for all classes. However, if you are interested in learning or improving foreign language skills, study abroad is the perfect opportunity to do so. Look into program requirements and offerings to check the language of instruction and available foreign language courses.

Studying abroad is all about stepping outside of your comfort zone. We provide support and resources that will make the transition easier, and there are also several great tools that will allow you to stay in touch with friends and family. If you’re really concerned, choose a program that won’t require you to be away from home for too long.

While your grades from the classes you take abroad won’t be factored into your UNO GPA, they will affect your cumulative GPA which can impact your financial aid. If you have questions, contact the Office of Financial Support and Scholarships.

Yes. Some programs include health insurance, but students participating in all other programs will need to purchase insurance through the Education Abroad office. Learn more about our insurance coverage here.

All students traveling outside of the United States will need a passport. There are many factors that go into determining whether or not a visa is necessary. Students are responsible for obtaining all necessary travel documents prior to departure for their program. Learn more information here.
