Professor Miles teaches primarily Strategy courses in the undergraduate, MBA, and Executive MBA programs. She also teaches courses in entrepreneurship, innovation, and global strategy.
Dr. Miles' areas of expertise include strategic management and entrepreneurship with specific interest garnered toward how institutional or environmental factors influence firm strategy. Working in the financial and banking industry, Dr. Miles experienced first-hand how the external environments influenced trade activity and fund strategy, which motivated her to seek further understanding of these relationships. Her research focuses on how economic environment conditions as well as community relationships influence firm decisions and strategies, with particular interest in entrepreneurial firms. In addition to this line of research, Dr. Miles also studies technology and innovation management within the biotechnology industry. In this line of research she focuses on how external relationships influence innovation patterns and outcomes. Her work has appeared in journal such as Journal of Management, Research Policy, Journal of International Management Reviews, and Asia Pacific Management Journal, as well as the Academy of Management Conference proceedings.
Dr. Miles is one of the founders of the innovative and award winning Capstone Cup. She is the point person and engages in recruitment of area employers to serve as judges for this semester-long event. Professor Miles is also part of a four-person team that spearheaded the Jack & Stephanie Koraleski Commerce and Applied Behavioral (CAB) Laboratory in the College of Business. Typically only found in doctoral-granting colleges, the Koraleski CAB Lab poses a great deal of potential for fellow CBA faculty members. As part of this initiative, Dr. Miles manages the Participant Pool. Dr. Miles is a strategy liaison to the UNO Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Franchising and is actively involved in establishing bridges to further connect entrepreneurial efforts across the UNO campus. Dr. Miles also serves on CBA's Strategic Planning Council and Faculty Development Council committees and is a faculty sponsor the the Delta Sigma Pi fraternity. She is a member of the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society and has served as a reviewer for prestigious academic management conferences and journals.
