Doug Ewald

Doug Ewald

  • Master of Professional Accounting 1987
  • Managing Director, KPMG

Additional Information

Inducted 2015

Doug Ewald is a managing director in the state and local tax practice of KPMG LLP, the audit, tax and advisory firm. Working from the firm’s Omaha office, he specializes in many aspects of Nebraska taxation, including income, indirect, property and economic incentive matters.

Before joining KPMG in 2013, Ewald served as Nebraska Tax Commissioner for seven years, leading the Nebraska Department of Revenue. In this position, he restructured the department into a more customer-responsive agency and successfully promoted the use of electronic tax-return filing, making Nebraska a leader in this area.

Ewald holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, and a Master of Professional Accounting degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. After graduating from UNO, Ewald worked for the accounting firm of Arthur Andersen & Co. before joining the tax department at Union Pacific Railroad in 1990.

Throughout his 17-year career with Union Pacific, Ewald progressed within the ranks of the tax department, ultimately serving as the director of State Tax Compliance, Audit and Financial Reporting. Governor Dave Heineman appointed Ewald as Tax Commissioner in December 2006.

Ewald is an active member of UNO’s College of Business Administration accounting advisory board and the Buena Vista University presidents’ advisory council. Although he serves on a variety of boards, he says he is most proud of time spent with his sons in youth sporting and scouting activities.
