The 2025 Summer Keyboard Institute will take place June 23-27, 2025.

The Summer Keyboard Institute aims to explore keyboard skills focusing on gospel music, jazz, contemporary music and music technology for all ages and levels.

Come join us for a week of fun with Faculty members of the University of Nebraska at Omaha's School of Music who are committed to the education and performance of these varied styles of music and technology skills.

We are excited to announce the addition to our Summer Keyboard Institute focusing on skills necessary to engage in Collaborative Piano experiences. If you are interested in learning more about jobs focusing in collaborative piano at schools, churches, musical theatres, and small or large ensembles, join us for an informative week learning successful tools and processes to create fulfilling collaborative work.
 
Our state-of-the-art keyboard labs support midi-keyboards and cutting-edge piano software to help individuals at every step of the music learning experience. All levels from beginner to advanced keyboard players are welcome. Join us in exploring contemporary keyboard playing and varied music while engaging in music technology for the future.

Registration Fees:

  • $200 for each session (morning OR afternoon)
  • For those interested in both the morning collaborative session and an afternoon intermediate/advanced session, the cost is $350.00 (a $50 discount).

Sessions:

  • Beginner: 9:00-11:30am
  • Collaborative Piano: 9:00am-12:00pm
  • Intermediate/Advanced: 12:30-4:30pm

Beginners:
  • 9:30-10:15am - Keyboard
  • 10:15-10:30am - Break
  • 10:30-11:00am - Gospel
  • 11:00-11:30am - Music Technology
  • 11:30am - Session concludes
Collaborative Piano:
  • 9:00-10:00am - Score Reading/Simplification tools
  • 10:00-11:00am - Musical Theater & Contemporary Repertoire
  • 11:00am-12:00pm - Ensemble Playing (orchestral, band, choral)
  • 12:00pm - Session concludes
Intermediate/Advanced:
  • 12:30-1:00pm - Theory
  • 1:00-2:00pm - Keyboard (Gospel, Jazz, Contemporary)
  • 2:00-3:00pm - Music Tech
  • 3:00-4:00pm - Keyboard
  • 4:00-4:30pm - Ensemble work / Discussion
  • 4:30pm - Session concludes

Courses:

  • Gospel: Students will learn the fundamentals of the gospel style and apply them to hymn reading, traditional gospel, and contemporary gospel. Students will learn 2-4 songs over the week that are appropriate and applicable in a gospel setting. Lastly students will learn how to read chord charts to facilitate performing the CCM genre.
  • Jazz: Students will discuss history of jazz, fundamental chord progressions found in the jazz repertoire, chord voicings and improvisational techniques.
  • Contemporary keyboard: Students will learn chords and inversions, reading chord charts and improvisational techniques to apply to contemporary music styles. Students will learn to navigate midi keyboards while using different patches and sound effects.
  • Collaborative Piano: Selected intermediate/advanced students who are interested or who are currently collaborating in the community will work on simplification, analysis, sight reading, and score reading skills to strengthen their musicianship. We will explore skills required to collaborate with schools, choirs, musical theater, and ensembles during the week.
  • Music Technology: Students will learn best practices when sequencing, recording, editing, and otherwise creating in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).
