WEAR BLACK, GIVE BACK is a 24-hour day of giving to the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) to raise money for scholarships, colleges and programs, student groups and activities, wellness, and much more! The day starts at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 12, and lasts through noon on Thursday, Oct. 13.

UNO offers more than 200 high-quality academic programs in a safe, affordable city. With more than 1,500 international students and participants, we are a diverse and globally focused university. UNO students have more than 500 options to take their education global as part of their degree. There's no better time to be a Maverick!

This year, International Programs seeks support in four critical areas:

Education Abroad:
Our Education Abroad programming is committed to sending Mavericks all over the world by providing opportunities to develop global citizenship through international education. Students gain confidence, career skills, cross-cultural perspectives, adaptability, and deepen their knowledge of their chosen academic focus through study abroad. Finances continue to be the number one barrier for UNO students hoping to take their education global. Donations to Education Abroad will help offset and defray travel costs for UNO students participating in credit bearing programs.

International Student Scholarships:
International students do not have the same access to financial aid, scholarships, and employment as domestic students during their time studying in the United States. Here in Omaha, many international students rely on the generosity of others to successfully complete their degree at UNO. You can support these hardworking students who are dedicated to building a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their community! Donations will be used for the retention of international students through the Janet and Thomas Miller International Student Scholarship Fund.

ILUNO:
Our Intensive English program is one of the oldest and most highly regarded English as a second language programs in the region, founded in 1977. Experienced instructors teach reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing, listening, pronunciation, university exam preparation and critical thinking skills. Donations will be used to support students learning English through the ILUNO programming.

Center for Afghanistan Studies: Through war and peace, destitution and reconstruction, the University of Nebraska Omaha's Center for Afghanistan Studies and its partners have been on the ground in Afghanistan- printing textbooks, training teachers and journalists, and advising U.S. government officials. The center's team members have deep roots in Afghanistan. Many were born and raised there, later working and raising families amid history-making events. Others have spent nearly their entire professional lives studying the country's culture and geography, visiting its cities and villages, and working with Afghans. All are deeply committed to preserving Afghanistan's heritage and developing its economy and civil society. Donations will be used to continue our efforts in preserving and sharing Afghanistan's culture and history.

International Programs seeks donors who would like to support these critical efforts during this 24-hour period of giving. When you support International Programs, you are improving the educational experience of international students at UNO as well as students studying and researching across the world. You can help in multiple ways:

  • Make your gift to the International Programs or donate directly to one of our four campaigns: Center for Afghanistan Studies, Education Abroad, ILUNO Intensive English, International Student Scholarships
  • Show your support on social media with the hashtag #WearBlackGiveBack.
  • Create your own fundraising page and set a monetary goal to encourage your network to join you in supporting International Programs at UNO
  • Take part in the Wear Black Give Back Challenges to increase our chances of winning funds
  • Consider creating your own challenge/matching category to encourage donations to International Programs. If you're interested, please get in touch: bmiller99@unomaha.edu

In addition, each donor of $60 or more will receive a pair of UNO gloves in thanks for their support of Wear Black, Give Back!
