International Education Week 2022
International Education Week (IEW) has provided an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide since its inception in the year 2000, and UNO has actively participated since the very beginning. IEW is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.
Join UNO's International Programs as we celebrate International Education Week (IEW) once again this November. Events throughout the week highlight UNO's global community and a variety of ways to experience international education in Omaha.
The Schedule
“Eyes on the World” Photo Contest
Often, the impact of intercultural exchanges is difficult to put into words, but as it is often said, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” The “Eyes on the World” Photo Contest is open to submissions from all UNO faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Photos for this year’s contest should be submitted at the following link before 5:00 pm Thursday, 10 November: 2022 Eyes on the World Photo Submission
We are looking for three specific photo categories this year:
- Experiencing New Traditions
- Wearing your Traditional/Cultural Clothing
- Connecting with International Friends
Entries will be displayed on the Education Abroad Website, and all students, faculty, staff members and alumni will be able to vote for their favorites. Voting will begin Friday, 11 November and end on Monday, 14 November by submitting your votes at the following link: 2022 Eyes on the World Voting. A university is filled with people who believe in ideals. Once every generation or so, a teacher steps on stage who not only personifies the ideal concept of teacher but also raises the bar on what we imagined possible. That one individual impacts generation upon generation by inspiring the new ideal. Charles Gildersleeve was one such educator. He began his career at the University of Nebraska at Omaha on September 1st, 1964. Charles (Charlie/Chuck) was one of the founding faculty members of the International Studies Major and a professor of Geography at UNO. He always made himself available to help students with study-abroad independent studies courses and gave permission for students who were registering late to enroll in his already overly full classes. His guest lecture each semester in the International Studies intro course was a highlight for all students. He took it upon himself to make international students feel at home in class and on campus with his inimitable warmth and wonderful sense of humor. In memory of his contributions to International Studies Majors and to international students at UNO, since 2009, UNO International Programs has presented the Charles Gildersleeve "Know-Your-World" Lecture each year during International Education Week. |
This year’s presentation will showcase a panel discussion of several UNO geographical field studies courses illustrated with slides from England, Costa Rica, and the U.S. We are positive Charlie would have been pleased to know our students are traveling and learning in so many different locations around the globe. Pizza, salad, and soda will be available for those who attend. Event Flyer
