UNO International Programs has authorization from the U.S. Department of State to offer opportunities for research to individuals with sponsorship from a UNO academic department.

Sponsored J-1 Scholars at UNO include:

  • Research Scholars, Professors, and Short-Term Scholars
  • Post-Doctoral Fellows performing a specified research program

Sponsor Guidelines

Academic departments seeking to sponsor J-1 scholars are encouraged to review the UNO J-1 scholar sponsorship guidelines.

UNO International Programs serves as a BridgeUSA program sponsor and follows this Department of State guide for administering the program.

The J-1 Scholar Sponsorship Process

The process of bringing an international scholar to UNO may take several months before a visa can be issued for travel. You can find a full outline of the process below.

  • The sponsoring UNO academic department first sends an email request to UNO International Student Advising (unointladvising@unomaha.edu) to add a staff or faculty member as a department user in iGlobal, the International Programs online portal for international student and scholar management.
  • Once given access to iGlobal, the department user submits an e-form with documentation for review by International Advising.
  • International Advising will then invite the J-1 scholar and request they submit an additional e-form and documentation in iGlobal.
  • After International Advising receives a completed J-1 scholar application from the sponsoring academic department through iGlobal and the e-form from the J-1 scholar, the Responsible Officer (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) will issue a Form DS-2019 for the scholar to apply for a J-1 visa and make travel preparations to come to UNO.
