The National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education (NCITE) Center at UNO marks the close of its inaugural research year with an annual meeting principally for Department of Homeland Security senior leaders and members of its 18-institution research consortium. The virtual event on June 29 is aimed to connect researchers and students to the difficult problem sets faced by DHS, particularly as the department focuses its efforts on domestic terrorism.
A top DHS official will be featured in remarks and a Q-and-A that is open to the public. DHS Counterterrorism Coordinator John Cohen, assistant secretary for counterterrorism and threat prevention, will speak following opening remarks at 10:30 A.M.
Anyone is welcome to watch live at unomaha.edu/ncite.
This annual meeting falls at a particularly relevant time given the recent release of a first-ever White House domestic terrorism strategy. That strategy followed a threat assessment from intelligence agencies that called the greatest threat to the Homeland comes from “lone offenders, often radicalized online, who look to attack soft targets with easily accessible weapons.” This marks a sea-change in federal approach around violent extremism that NCITE researchers are well-poised to help untangle.
