We'll share a vintage University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) photo each Thursday on our homepage as part of the popular "Throwback Thursday."
Check back each week for a photo celebrating UNO's history, and to learn more about what's happening on campus and in our community, and future plans for the university.
From the UNO photo archives comes a rather comical photo labeled "Parking, Bison Patrol, 1970s."
Cars and other means of transportation have definitely evolved over the past four decades.
Read on below to learn about new UNO transportation options announced earlier this month.
Parking Services Announces New Transportation Options for the Campus Commuter
Parking Services and Business and Finance are excited to announce FOUR sustainable new programs that just might change how you commute to campus in 2015.
-
MavRide – Expanded to UNO faculty/staff
-
Zimride – A ride sharing program new to UNO in January 2015
-
Emergency Ride Home – A ride to get you home if the unforeseen happens
-
Zipcar – Expanded for UNO department use
Riding the bus or sharing a ride through the Zimride program will translate to a “greener” trip to and from campus and Zipcar will now be available for department use. All these programs will help commuters manage their costs while reducing parking pressure and traffic congestion on campus.
MavRide
In January 2015, Parking Services will be piloting a free bus ride program for faculty & staff with Metro Bus. The program will offer free rides on the Metro Bus System (similar to the MavRide program students currently enjoy)
To register for MavRide, you simply send an email to Parking Services at unoparking@unomaha.edu
Your MavCard is your bus pass, but you must be registered with UNO Parking Services to activate your card with Metro Bus. The MavRide passes can be used at any time on any Metro Bus, but must be used by the UNO employee. Visit the Parking Services website for program policies.
Zimride (Ridesharing)
Zimride is a social rideshare program specifically designed for the University community. It allows you to share rides with others who travel along the same route. Zimride can be used for routine commutes as well as one-time trips and uses social profiles to leverage trust among users. The site is expected to go LIVE on January 27th with the first rideshares to begin on February 10. This service will be available to students, faculty and staff at no charge to the rider. Links to the Zimride program will be on the Parking Services website. Look for future updates with more information.
Emergency Ride Home Service
Commuters can receive a free ride home when unexpected emergencies occur. UNO is contracting with a taxi service to provide this service for commuters who have opted to take mass transit or have biked to campus and need to leave campus immediately. Look for details of this service in the near future on the Parking Services website. This service will be available to both students, faculty and staff.
Zipcar
Zipcar is a car sharing program that has been used successfully at UNO since 2013. It is a great option for those that need the use of a car on an infrequent basis. Beginning January 2015, the Zipcar option will also be available for UNO department use. This option might eliminate your need for a department vehicle. Give it a try! Sign up for Zipcar department use is January 12th.
