The current health pandemic creates unprecedented needs for the people and organizations we care about, including the University of Nebraska at Omaha community.
Giving Tuesday Now (#GivingTuesdayNow) is a new global day of giving and unity on May 5, 2020, in emergency response to the COVID-19 virus. Because of the urgency, it takes place in advance of the traditional Giving Tuesday on Dec. 1.
Those who wish to support causes related to UNO on May 5 have an opportunity to make a difference.
Food insecurity is becoming more evident on college campuses, and UNO is no exception. UNO’s Maverick Food Pantry contributes to UNO’s culture of caring by providing resources to those in immediate need and connecting them with additional resources in the greater Omaha area for long-term support.
The Maverick Food Pantry has launched a limited-time crowdfunding campaign at fundraise.nufoundation.org/unomavfoodpantry with the goal to raise $5,000. Meeting the goal would enable it to provide its services through the end of the year, which often represents some of the most difficult months for food-insecure individuals.
The Maverick Food Pantry offers food and personal hygiene products to all members of the UNO community by providing healthy, organic and culturally sensitive items.
The most current data available indicates an increasing need for the services provided by the pantry. During the 2018-2019 academic year, it received more than 1,250 requests for food bags, up 158% from the year before. The current health pandemic is known to cause students additional hardships now.
