Giving Tuesday has become a well-recognized addition to the themed shopping days just after Thanksgiving, and this year it falls on Nov. 30. It offers a philanthropic opportunity to support academic institutions and nonprofits.
UNO encourages those who wish to support the Maverick student experience to lend a hand to those who especially need support this season and throughout the year.
Support those experiencing food insecurities
Facing food insecurity is an unfortunate reality for university students at UNO and nationwide. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 1-in-3 college students worried about not having enough to eat. Thankfully, the Maverick Food Pantry is a steadfast campus resource to support the dietary and personal hygiene needs of students at UNO and UNMC.
Support students facing an unplanned crisis
The UNO Student Hardship Fund supports students who, unfortunately, face sudden financial hardships due to a personal crisis they’re experiencing. This may include a health-related issue, a family crisis or other situations. The Hardship Fund enables the university to provide help when it’s needed most, with aid provided through the Office of the Chancellor.
Support a first-rate education
A gift to the UNO Fund for Student Scholarships helps students who may not otherwise be able to afford to attend UNO and supports students with both financial need and academic promise. These vital scholarships are awarded by the UNO Office of Financial Support and Scholarships.
Beth Hoyt of McCook, Nebraska, is one of the students who is grateful for the UNO Fund for Student Scholarships which will help her to graduate in May 2022.
“It lightened the financial load a lot,” Hoyt said. “My family has always put a lot of value on higher education, and I’m just so incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Having that help with tuition … I’m so grateful I won’t be in debt for a long time afterward. That was a terrifying prospect. But just to have that peace of mind is so incredible and so rare, and I’m incredibly grateful for that.”
This Giving Tuesday, thanks for considering a contribution to support UNO students. Other giving options are at nufoundation.org/uno.
