UNO Medieval and Renaissance Studies and UNO History Department presents 59th Missouri Valley History Conference Keynote Lecture.
Dr. Thomas F. Madden will be discussing The Crusades and ISIS: Modern Appropriation of Medieval Holy Wars.
Dr. Madden is a Professor of History and a Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at St. Louis University. He is a specialist on the Crusades, and he has often commented on the popular media after the events of September 11, to discuss topics such as how Muslims have viewed the medieval Crusades and their parallels to today's interventions in the Middle East.
He has appeared as an author and consultant in venues such as The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, the History Channel and National Public Radio. Dr. Madden's recent books include "Venice: A New History," "The Concise History of the Crusades," "Empires of Trust," and "Enrico Dandolo and the Rise of Venice."
He has also written and lectured extensively on the ancient and medieval Mediterranean as well as the history of Christianity and Islam. Awards for his scholarship include the Medieval Academy of America's Haskins Medal and the Medieval Institute's Otto Grundler Prize. He is a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Medieval Academy of America.

The 59th Missouri Valley History Conference, on the topic of Sacred Sites, Holy Places, will be held at Magnolia Hotel downtown on March 3-5, 2016, featuring 50 panels with almost 200 historians from the US, Canada and Europe. About 400 scholars, UNO students and faculty, Omaha Dual Enrollment teachers, high school students and member of the Omaha community will be given the opportunity of attending the conference and its lectures.
For almost sixty years the Missouri Valley History Conference has been an annual rite of spring for the Midwestern historical community. Founded and organized by the Department of History, the conference is the longest standing professional gathering of historians in our region. With panels on all time periods of history, from the classical era to the modern, and with all topical emphases. From political history to newer social and cultural approaches, the conference allows scholars to exchange ideas and advance historical knowledge.
The event is free and open to the public.
