From: Omaha Parks, Recreation, and Public Property – University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) sophomore Anna Di Ruocco has organized an Arbor Day tree planting on UNO's campus that will include Mayor Jean Stothert, members from the City of Omaha Parks and Recreation Department, two 8th graders from Alice Buffett Magnet Middle School, and members of UNO and UNO Student Government.
Along with the Red Maple tree that UNO is planting, the City of Omaha Parks and Recreation has donated a London Planetree and a Bald Cypress to be planted. The planting will take place Friday, April 25th on UNO's Pacific campus, just north of the Peter Kiewitt Institute at 11 a.m.
UNO College of Business Administration senator Di Ruocco has organized the tree-planting as a way to get the community and students involved.
"I have memories of planting trees when I was younger and giving back to my community has always been important to me," said Di Ruocco, who serves as the UNO College of Business Administration Senator. "I decided to organize the tree planting because I recognize the importance of sustainability and want to make sure that future Mavericks have the opportunity to study and learn on the same gorgeous campus that I have."
This is the 36th year that the City of Omaha has been awarded with the Tree City USA award. Last year the City of Omaha Forestry crew removed 2,046 trees, trimmed 3,004 and planted 475 trees in Omaha.
