UNO Invites Community to Mark 25th Anniversary of 9/11

UNO will recognize 25 years since the Sept. 11 attacks with opportunities for the campus and Omaha communities to remember lives lost and honor service.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is inviting Mavericks and members of the Omaha community to come together in remembrance, reflection, and service years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

➡️ What’s happening: The UNO Office of Military and Veteran Services is organizing campus recognitions, including a memorial flag display and opportunities to honor first responders and those who lost their lives in combat in the years that followed.

🎤 What they’re saying:

  • UNO Chancellor Joanne Li, Ph.D., CFA: “Each year, Sept. 11 is a moment for us to reflect on those we lost and honor those who answered the call to serve. I invite our Maverick and Omaha communities to join us in remembrance and in the spirit of unity on a day that connects us as neighbors and as a nation.”
  • Chase Kratochvil, UNO Director of Federal & Military Relations: “For many Military-Connected Mavericks, the terrorist attacks on 9/11 are very personal and still at the forefront of their minds. For the UNO military-connected veterans, service members, and military families, many have had their lives and service shaped by what happened that day and in the 25 years since. However, the vast majority of UNO’s student body was also not alive on 9/11. These remembrance events, such as seeing 7,091 flags in the pep bowl representing each of the lives lost in combat since 9/11, provide a somber reminder of the cost of freedom. Coming together gives us an opportunity to honor those who are with us and remember those we have lost.”

🇺🇸 How to participate: UNO will offer two ways for the community to take part in the anniversary recognition:

  • 9/11 Memorial StairMaster Climb: Friday, Sept. 11, 8 A.M.-4 P.M., North Weight Room. UNO Campus Recreation & Wellness and UNO Student Veterans of America invite participants to climb up to 110 stories — the height of the World Trade Center towers — in honor of the firefighters who died responding to the attacks. Three StairMasters will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Omaha Fire Department members will join the tribute from 11 A.M. to noon. UNO faculty and staff will receive free access for the day to participate. Participants may complete all or part of the climb.
  • Pep Bowl Flag Memorial: Friday, Sept. 11. The Office of Military and Veteran Services (OMVS) will have flags placed in the Pep Bowl honoring the more than 7,000 lives lost in combat since 9/11. Flags will be on display through Sept. 14.
