Whether in-person or online, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is the best school in the nation for veterans to receive an education, according to a new Military Times ranking.

➡️ What’s happening: Military Times ranked UNO No. 1 out of 357 universities nationally for traditional and online education in its annual Best for Vets: Colleges ranking.

🔎 Zoom in: UNO's full Best for Vets ranking profile:

  • No. 1 in traditional and online
  • No. 1 in Nebraska
  • No. 1 in the central region
  • No. 4 among all public universities
  • No. 8 overall among public and private universities

💡 Why it matters:

  • UNO is home to more than 1,600 military-connected students.
  • The Best for Vets list is the largest and most comprehensive ranking of schools for service members and veterans, evaluating campus services and practical factors that help them plan careers and make the most of their education benefits.
  • This is the second consecutive year UNO has ranked in the top five among public universities, a major recognition of university wide support of military-connected students led by the Office of Military and Veteran Services.

🎤 What they’re saying:

  • Joanne Li, Ph.D., CFA, Chancellor: "Serving those who have served our country is both a great honor and a great responsibility. This national recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to ensure military-connected students receive not only a quality education, but a meaningful, supportive experience. I am incredibly proud of the Maverick community for making UNO a national leader in veteran and military student success."
  • Chase Kratochvil, Director of Federal and Military Relations: “Success is rarely achieved alone. This recognition is the result of a university wide commitment to the lifelong success of military-connected students. At UNO, we look to foster a culture that respects their service, supports their goals, and embraces their spirit of a Maverick. Thank you to the students, staff, faculty, and community members who make UNO so welcoming to many military-connected students.”
  • Sara Karnowski, Director of Military and Veteran Services: “It’s an honor and a privilege to work with veterans and military-connected students every day. I am especially proud of our broader military-connected community for building a welcoming and supportive environment that extends beyond the Military-Connected Resource Center and into the rest of campus. That sense of purpose and belonging doesn’t stop at our office doors, it’s a hallmark of UNO.”
