The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Intensive English Program (IEP) is pleased to announce the continuation of the Liesl Wanzenried Memorial Scholarship, which supports international students pursuing English language studies at UNO.

The scholarship honors the memory of Liesl Wanzenried, who worked in the ILUNO Language Lab in the early 1990s. Known for her kindness, generosity, and dedication to international students, Liesl found joy in helping students improve their English skills and build meaningful connections across cultures. Following her passing, her family established the scholarship to continue her legacy of supporting students from around the world.

For the 2026 academic year, two scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to students admitted to UNO’s Intensive English Program. The awards may be applied toward IEP tuition costs and are intended to help students continue their educational journey at UNO.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be admitted to the Intensive English Program for Fall 2026
  • Be a non-native English speaker
  • Plan to continue in the IEP for another semester
  • Not receiving financial support from another scholarship, sponsor, or funding agency

The Liesl Wanzenried Memorial Scholarship reflects UNO’s commitment to creating opportunities for international students and fostering a welcoming global community. By helping students pursue English language study, the scholarship supports academic success while honoring the values of compassion, service, and cultural exchange that Liesl embodied throughout her life.

Applications are due July 15, 2026.

Community members, alumni, and friends who wish to support international students are invited to contribute to the Liesl Wanzenried Memorial Scholarship Fund. Gifts help expand educational opportunities for Intensive English Program students and ensure that Liesl’s legacy continues to impact future generations. For information about making a contribution, contact the University of Nebraska Foundation.
