Reporting Serious Situations (J-1)

The safety of all international students and scholars is a top priority. Emergencies and serious situations can happen sometimes. To help protect students, scholars and institutions, the U.S. Department of State requires that any serious incident involving a J-1 student or scholar be reported to them by the International Programs office within 24 hours.

During an Emergency

If you need immediate help, call or text 9-1-1 from the closest phone.

Then, you must immediately report the serious situation to International Advising (unointladvising@unomaha.edu).

The J-1 Responsible Officer (RO) must report the incident to the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Private Sector Exchange Administration (OPA) within 24 hours. This OPA office responds to incidents that might affect the health, safety, or welfare of a J-1 student or scholar.

What Situations Should You Report?

Not all situations are an immediate emergency and require you to call or text 9-1-1. Some non-emergency situations are still very serious and DO need to be reported to International Advising (unointladvising@unomaha.edu) immediately. Those situations include:

  • Serious illnesses or injuries
  • Legal issues, such as an arrest, citation, criminal charges, or involvement with law enforcement
  • Sexually related incidents or abuse, including sexual assault, exploitation, harassment or domestic abuse allegations or incidents
  • Missing person
  • Death
  • Lost or stolen passport
  • Serious situations in the workplace, such as sexual harassment or discrimination
  • Other serious situations. This could include any involvement in natural disasters, fires, or if you are a victim of theft or other crime

Emergency Contacts

U.S. Emergency System

Calling or texting 9-1-1 is recommended when you need immediate assistance. When you call or text 9-1-1, police, an ambulance and fire truck will be sent to the location of the emergency immediately and arrive within minutes.
