A valid, unexpired visa is required to enter the U.S.

Learn how to apply for a student visa after admission to the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) and the International Language at the University of Nebraska Omaha (ILUNO) Program.

What is a Student Visa?

The visa signals you have the permission of the U.S. government for you to enter the country and stay for the duration of your University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) program.

Once you are accepted to UNO for an undergraduate, graduate, or Intensive English (ILUNO) program and you have submitted all the documentation necessary, UNO will issue either Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 for you to begin the process of applying for your F-1 or J-1 visa.

What is the difference between the F-1 and J-1 visa?

New students can contact International Advising with questions about choosing the proper student visa.

Apply for Your Student Visa

Once you have received Form I-20 or DS-2019 from UNO, complete Form I-901 in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and pay the required fee. Then, you can begin the application process for your visa.

  1. Check with your country's U.S. Embassy or Consulate about specific visa requirements*.
  2. Gather all required documents.
  3. Fill out the DS-160 visa application.
  4. Make an appointment for a visa interview per your country’s Embassy or Consulate instructions.
  5. Attend your visa interview.
    • Review tips for success.
    • Bring all of the necessary documents with you.
  6. Review your visa to ensure all the information is correct. If your visa is delayed or denied, please notify UNO International Advising immediately.

When Entering the U.S., you must have your visa and either Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 with you.

*Canadian citizens and international students from Bermuda do not need a U.S. visa but are still required to secure Form I-20 or DS-2019 from UNO.

For more information about preparing for the student visa interview, please consider attending one of our Admitted Student workshops on visa interview preparation. For upcoming dates and registration, review our Newly Admitted Student Resources page.
