UNO Student Husna Faizi Named 2026 Newman Civic Fellow

Omaha, NE –

The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) proudly announces that Husna Faizi, a student majoring in International Studies and Political Science, has been selected as one of the 2026-27 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows. The fellowship recognizes student civic leaders from colleges and universities across the country who are committed to finding solutions to challenges facing their communities.

Faizi was nominated by UNO Chancellor Joanne Li, Ph.D., CFA, in recognition of her exceptional commitment to expanding educational opportunities, increasing language access, and empowering women and youth through community and civic engagement.

At UNO, Faizi serves as an Ambassador for Answer the Call, where she engages in policy education on national issues and collaborates with fellow student leaders. She served as a member of the First Year Leadership Council in 2025. She currently serves as the Outreach Coordinator for the Afghan Student Association and as a Thrive Leadership Club Coach. She is passionate about her work mentoring young people as they develop confidence and leadership skills.

Beyond campus, Faizi works directly with Afghan women and refugee communities, using education as a pathway to empowerment and social mobility. Her leadership is rooted in collaboration, cultural understanding, and a commitment to advancing human rights.

"My community engagement began when I arrived in the United States with very little English, but a strong desire to make a difference," Faizi said. "What motivates me is my passion to be a voice for those who are not always heard, especially women in my community."

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a year-long program that recognizes students who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to creating positive change. Named in honor of the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact's founders, the fellowship provides students with learning opportunities, networking experiences, and resources that support their growth as civic leaders capable of addressing complex public challenges.

In the spirit of Newman's leadership, each fellow is nominated by their campus president or chancellor, who selects one community-committed student each year. Chancellor Li nominated Faizi for her dedication to fostering leadership and creating meaningful opportunities for underserved communities.

Through the fellowship, Campus Compact connects students with a national network of civic leaders while offering programming that emphasizes personal, professional, and civic development. These experiences equip fellows to collaborate across disciplines and create lasting impact in their communities.
