Monette Honored with Civic Nebraska's Champion of Learning Award

Omaha, NE – The University of Nebraska at Omaha's Office of Engagement is proud to celebrate Assistant Director Toni Monette, who has been named a recipient of Civic Nebraska's 2026 Champion of Learning Award. The award recognizes Nebraskans whose leadership strengthens democracy by expanding opportunities for civic learning and empowering others to become active participants in their communities.
For those who know Monette's work at UNO, the recognition reflects years of dedication to creating meaningful experiences where students don't just learn about civic engagement-- they practice it. Students gain firsthand experience building relationships, serving alongside community partners, and applying civic learning beyond the classroom.
As Assistant Director of the Office of Engagement, Monette leads university-wide initiatives that connect students with their communities through service-learning, civic education, democratic engagement, and community partnerships. Her work helps students develop the knowledge, confidence, and skills to become thoughtful leaders while strengthening relationships between the university and community organizations across Nebraska.
I believe one of the most important things we can do is empower people with the knowledge and tools to find their own way to advocacy and civic engagement. There are many lanes to making a difference, and all of them matter. When more people understand the power of their voice and how they can use it, we build stronger, more resilient communities together.
Under her leadership, students have participated in initiatives that encourage informed dialogue, community-based learning, voter engagement, and public service. These experiences help prepare graduates not only for successful careers but also for meaningful participation in their communities.
Beyond UNO, Monette is recognized nationally for advancing civic engagement through leadership with the League of Women Voters of the United States, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and presentations that help colleges and universities strengthen democratic engagement. She also serves on the board of Elevate Omaha.
While the Champion of Learning Award recognizes her individual leadership, it also highlights the collaborative work happening every day across UNO and with community. The UNO Office of Engagement is a department dedicated to supporting this work, where faculty, staff, students, and community partners work together to build stronger communities through education and service.

Presented annually by Civic Nebraska, the Champion of Learning Award honors individuals who use education as a catalyst for civic participation and community change. Toni will be recognized alongside other honorees during the Strengthening Democracy Awards on Sept. 17.
