Faculty Resources for Accessible Teaching

Through the Accessibility Services Center (ASC), faculty and other instructional staff can access tools and services related to digital accessibility, instructional support, accommodation management, student communication, and syllabus guidance. Faculty play a vital role in ensuring students have equitable access to course content and learning experiences and are encouraged to connect with ASC for support.

Syllabus Statements

Instructors must include accessibility statements in their syllabi to ensure students are informed about available accommodations and accessibility resources. The Accessibility Services Center (ASC) standard accommodation statement is required for all courses. Additional statements may be required depending on your course format and instructional methods.

"Reasonable accommodations are provided for students who are registered with the Accessibility Services Center (ASC) and make their requests sufficiently in advance. For more information, contact ASC (Location: 104 HK | 402.554.2872 | unoaccessibility@unomaha.edu)."

"In addition to accommodations in the classroom, ASC can help coordinate accommodations for practicum sites, internships, service learning experiences, or other field placements. It is important to speak with ASC early in the site selection process. Students should contact ASC well in advance of the field placement to ensure that reasonable accommodations can be made."

"Reasonable accommodations are provided for students in Education or Study Abroad programs who are registered with ASC and make their requests sufficiently in advance. Students should contact ASC at least three months prior to their departure date. Accommodations may not be possible for all programs and locations."

Faculty Guide to Accommodations and FAQs

Faculty FAQs provide quick guidance on common accommodation questions, student communication, accessibility responsibilities, and classroom implementation. These resources are intended to help faculty and instructional staff better understand accommodation processes and identify best practices for supporting students.

While the FAQs address many common situations, individual circumstances may vary, and ASC is available to provide additional guidance when questions arise.

Communication and Referrals

Faculty are often the first to recognize when a student may need additional support. When concerns arise, faculty are encouraged to respond with care and connect students to appropriate campus resources. This may include referring students to the UNO Care Team, nominating them for hardship funding, or directing them to other available support services.
