POV: Summer is wrapping up. You’re refreshed and thinking more about the fall semester at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). You’ve met with your advisors; you’ve got no holds, and you know what classes you absolutely must get into.
But wait, you need to fill your fall schedule with an elective. Maybe you need to drop a class and get into something else. Or maybe you just want to learn something different and new. And college is supposed to make you a more well-rounded individual.
Right? Right?!? Right.
There are a number of unique learning experiences waiting to be experienced. And if you have no idea where to start, UNO has you covered. So, whether you’re into film, scuba, dancing, here is a list of cool classes for the fall 2025 semester. This list is not exhaustive, but it’s a start.

THEA 1070: Super Hero Cinema
A senses-shattering survey of cinema where heart-pounding action, motivating magic, and evil tinged with conscience create Anti-Heroes, those characters torn between good and evil, between desire and conscience, between heaven and hell. Students will discover the traits of Anti-Hero Cinema on the big screen reviewing selected full-length and short films, recorded lectures, and curated readings. Featuring a pulse-pounding parade of profound and provocative motion pictures!
PEA 111W: Scuba
Who says you can’t go scuba diving in no-coast country. SCUBA is an exciting, lifetime recreational activity that you can enjoy anywhere in the world and opens the doors to future tracks such as Marine Biology, Engineering, Physical Sciences and more. This course teaches students the basics of open water diving including equipment preparation, pre-dive safety checks, assembly and maintenance, and much more.
Note: The course fee is $650 and is held at DiVentures
PEA 112Q: Hip Hop Dance
UNO has an array of physical education classes to get you movin’ and in this case, groovin’. In Hip Hop Dance, you will practice the ins and outs that are needed to make you a master of the craft. Don’t think you have coordination? Or maybe you’ve taken some Hip Hop classes before and think this class might not have much left to teach you? Never fear! Course instructors are prepared to show you new tricks no matter your skill level.
PEA 112R: Net Games
Master all the country club sports that include a net: badminton, tennis, table tennis, and pickleball. Students will leave this one-hour credit course able to put their friends to shame, whether they are the winner of the residence hall’s ping pong tournament or being declared champion after a pick-up pickleball game.
PEA 111Z: Backpacking & Camping
There’s nothing like appreciating the great outdoors. It’s even better getting college credit from it. Students will learn the fundamentals of all the tricks to make the most of your next camping trip
FNBK 2280: Personal Finance
This may not sound the most exciting, but it’s so useful. You shouldn’t have to rely on an app to manage your money. This course focuses on teaching and developing sound financial habits through the application of concepts and activities that enhance personal and family finance.
MUS 167E: Piano for Non-Music Majors
This is made for teaching piano to specifically non-music majors. Instruction in this course will prepare students with basic keyboard skills. Fun games and popular music to sing along with playing the keyboard will show how fun learning the piano can be.
MUS 1100: Music of the People - Jazz
Jazz has roots in many genres of music. In this course, the history of jazz will be traced from its origins up to the present. Designed primarily for non-music majors, the course will chronicle the development of various stylistic trends which characterize jazz and discuss the prominent musical artists that influenced each style period within the history of jazz.
ART 3440: Exploring Art Therapy
How is art used to heal people? You can find out with this gem that overviews the historical use of art as a healing tool across cultures, and how it’s a valuable method today. Students participate in representative art therapy activities, but previous art experience is neither required nor expected. This is available to juniors or those with permission from the department.
