The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is taking major steps to ensure equal access to digital content for all students, faculty, and staff. In response to updated federal regulations under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), UNO must comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA by April 24, 2026.
To meet these requirements, UNO is implementing a campus-wide digital accessibility plan, which includes:
- Captioning all videos on UNO websites and learning platforms
- Adding alt text to images on websites and learning management systems
- Ensuring PDFs and documents are screen-reader accessible
- Reviewing and updating third-party software and digital tools
The initiative follows the 3R Rule for Digital Accessibility:
- Remove outdated, inaccessible content
- Revise materials to meet WCAG 2.1 standards
- Right First by designing all new content with accessibility in mind
UNO has established a Digital Accessibility Working Group and is launching training programs to support faculty, staff, and content creators. View upcoming workshops.
