Marticia Stennis, a custodian and member of UNO's Environmental Services team, has been named UNO’s employee of the month for February 2022.
Stennis was surprised by the UNO Celebration Committee on Wednesday, Feb. 16, to celebrate the honor.
In her nomination, Stennis’ friendly personality and reliability were highlighted.
“I have had several partners comment on conversations they had as Marti cleans around them, never pausing in her work, but at the same time helping them feel that someone was happy to see them back at the office,” her nominator said. “It’s hard to describe what a difference this makes, except to say that in a time when people feel scared, unsafe, and alone, being greeted by Marti’s smile as she industriously works her way through the building can change a person’s whole day.”
Her nominator also noted that, because she works in the Barbara Weitz Civic Engagement Center, Marti regularly cleans rooms occupied by building partners, who may not know building cleaning procedures at UNO.
“She understands building partners may not know the process and procedures of campus with respect to waste removal or carpet cleaning, but she is always prepared to educate and inform with smiles and kindness. Equally important is Marti will tell you when she doesn’t know something- but will escalate and help get the answer we need as quickly as possible.”
Her already important role as a custodian has become more critical with the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Marti plays a unique and under-appreciated role in the CEC. During COVID, people need to know that their decision to come back into a public space is safe and wise,” her nominator said. “Marti’s very active presence was a visible notification to our partners that the building was continually being cleaned and sanitized, and so without realizing it, I think people felt safer and more welcome.”
For being awarded as Employee of the Month, Stennis will receive a certificate, a hot/cold tumbler provided by the UNO Bookstore, a monetary award, two tickets to a UNO sporting event, and use of a designated parking space.
