The Omaha hockey team will be in Colorado this weekend for the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey West Regional. It is the fourth time in school history the Mavericks have appeared in the NCAA tournament.
About the Game
No. 12 UNO will face No. 2 Minnesota on Saturday, March 27 at 9 P.M. CT in Loveland, Colo. The winner will face either Minnesota State or Quinnipiac for a chance to go to the NCAA Frozen Four in Pittsburgh, Pa. on April 8 and 10.
The game will be televised live on ESPNU and if the Mavericks play on Sunday, the game will be shown on ESPN 2 beginning at 7 P.M. CT.
The Mavericks last played in the NCAA tournament in 2015. They won the Midwest Regional with wins over Harvard and RIT and earned UNO’s first berth in the Frozen Four. The Mavericks would lose to eventual national champion Providence College in the semifinal.
Omaha made its first NCAA appearance in 2006 under original head coach Mike Kemp and returned again in 2011 under head coach Dean Blais who also coached the 2015 team.
This will be the Mavericks’ first NCAA appearance under head coach Mike Gabinet.
The Mavericks are 3-4-0 all-time against Minnesota. From 2010-13, the two schools played regularly as members of the WCHA. UNO earned its first wins in that conference, beating the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis in their first two WCHA games.
