Green and white evacuation route sign in a jungle

If you are in an emergency, call the local emergency number immediately. After notifying local emergency services and getting yourself out of immediate danger, call your program or host university’s emergency line for assistance.

After an emergency has occurred, please contact the Education Abroad office as soon as possible at 402.554.3168. We will need your information, your location and program, and details of what has happened.

Our regular business hours are 8 A.M. - 5 P.M. CST.

If you need assistance outside of business hours, you should call UNO Police and Public Safety at 402.554.2648 and they can put you in touch with the after-hours emergency contact.

Medical Emergencies

If you are facing a medical emergency, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Your program should be able to assist you in locating a nearby emergency health care facility. You will need to notify your international insurance company as soon as possible. Most UNO students will have purchased AIG Travel Guard Insurance through Education Abroad.

AIG has a dedicated team of professionals who are available to support University of Nebraska travelers. If you experience an emergency while traveling abroad, contact AIG's international emergency line at +1.715.295.1194 from outside the U.S. This number is set as a collect/reverse charge call.

If you have questions about doctors, hospitals, medications, or resources in the areas where you will be traveling, log-in to AIG's travel assistance portal, call the international number while abroad, or call their toll-free U.S. phone number prior to departure at +1.877.832.3523. AIG has a global network of providers with the ability to directly bill to the insurance provider. If you need support, your first step is to contact AIG.

If you do not have AIG Travel Guard Insurance, you will need to contact your international insurance provider. This is the most common program with an individual insurance provider:

International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP)

Major Events

If a major event has occurred that could affect your safety (natural disaster, public attack, etc.), please check in with your family, your program, and the Education Abroad Office as soon as possible. AIG insurance holders have evacuation coverage in the event of an eligible political crisis or natural disaster.

Remember that there is a difference between a true emergency and a somewhat urgent situation. Please do not use emergency numbers if you are not in danger, can effectively manage the situation without assistance, or can wait until business hours to contact your program or the Education Abroad Office.

Crisis24 Horizon

Students on UNO study abroad programs are uploaded into the Crisis24 Horizon system, and are then invited by email to download the Crisis24 Horizon Mobile App. In addition to providing information and alerts in locations worldwide, the app also allows users to:

  • Access Local Emergency Contacts | Displays and dials emergency services in your current location (fire, police, EMS)
  • Call 24 Hour Hotline | Connects you with GardaWorld's global assistance hotline number
  • Send Safety Check-in | Confirms your location and safety during travel OR to communicate your safety during a dynamic security event (natural disaster, extreme weather, civil disturbance, atttack)
  • Send Crisis Signal | Travelers can use this button if you need immediate assistance and cannot speak on the phone. Defer to the hotline button if you can speak on the phone.

All student travelers should download and register themselves in the app when they receive the invite, to ensure they can take advantage of the apps services while preparing for and during their time abroad. Without the app, travelers can access the 24/7 hotline by calling +1.443.782.5151.

Education Abroad Report of Concern

If you are a student, faculty, or staff member who is traveling as part of a study abroad program, you can file an Education Abroad Report of Concern. This form will automatically go to the appropriate offices on campus depending on which category you select for the 'Nature of this report'. This is to ensure a timely response and to provide holistic support from UNO. In some cases, the form will go directly to the Title IX Coordinator and bypass UNO Education Abroad to protect privacy.
