The Sieu Mei Tu Endowment is a tribute to the enduring legacy of its namesake, Sieu Mei Tu, whose unwavering dedication to family, education, and hard work continues to inspire. Established by Sieu Mei Tu’s family, this endowment supports opportunities that enhance international engagement, fostering connections among UNO students and faculty through academic and cultural programs.
The Tu Family Story
Sieu Mei Tu’s life was one of great resilience and even greater determination. Born in Shanghai, China, in 1926, she experienced both privilege and hardship throughout her life. She and her husband, Joseph Zung Tu, built a comfortable life together in China. They had five children: Elaine, Norman, Ann, Harold, and David.
The political climate shifted in 1949, leading the Tu family to flee the country and eventually immigrate to the U.S. in 1956. As the family arrived in Oakland, California, with little more than hope for a better future, Sieu Mei Tu exemplified perseverance and sacrifice. She worked tirelessly to learn English and support her family, first as a housekeeper and then as a keypunch operator at Union Pacific Railroad.
Her hard work and discipline ensured her five children received a good education and opportunities to succeed. She taught them that failure was unacceptable and that taking pride in yourself and your family is essential. She believed deeply in the power of learning as a gateway to a better life and made countless sacrifices to ensure her children could pursue their academic and professional dreams.
Her hours of hard work laid the groundwork for future generations of the Tu family. Today, Sieu’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren honor her legacy by supporting opportunities for others to expand their horizons, learn, and grow. The Sieu Mei Tu Endowment reflects her lifelong resilience and continues her commitment to building a brighter future for others.
The Sieu Mei Tu Endowment supports UNO students studying abroad, ILUNO, undergraduate and graduate programs at UNO, as well as engagement within Asia.
