The following guidelines are intended to reduce your personal risk in the unlikely event that an Active Shooter incident should occur on campus.

How to Respond

  • RUN if you can see a safe way out

  • HIDE if there's no clear way out

  • FIGHT if your only option is to defend yourself

Run

  • Have an escape route and plan in mind

  • Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow

  • Leave your belongings behind (take your cell phone)

  • Help others escape, if possible

Hide

  • Lock the door

  • Blockade the door with heavy furniture

  • Silence your cellphone

  • Turn off any source of noise (e.g., radios, TV)

  • Spread out and hide behind large items (e.g., cabinets, desks)

  • Develop a plan of action should the active killer enter

  • Remain quiet

Fight

As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter by:

  • Acting as aggressively as possible against him/her

  • Throwing items and improvising weapons

  • Yelling

  • Committing to your actions
