Dancers perform an energetic routine on a well-lit stage with pink and green lighting. They leap into the air, arms raised, against a backdrop of geometric stage props.

High school students participated in a production of “Legally Blonde” at Gene Leahy Mall in downtown Omaha for the Summer Musical Theatre Academy.

🎯 Project Focus: The Summer Musical Theatre Academy (SMTA) provides tuition-free, industry-level training for high school musical theatre performers, technicians, and musicians in the Omaha area. Hosted by UNO's Theatre Department, SMTA ensures that students from all backgrounds have access to professional-level training and performance opportunities. By expanding outreach and building community partnerships, SMTA helps foster the next generation of theatre artists while strengthening UNO's role as a leader in arts education.

💡 Why It Matters

  • Access to arts education is limited: Many high school theatre programs lack resources and funding, limiting student opportunities for professional training.
  • Omaha’s arts community is growing: Hands-on training prepares students for careers in theatre, strengthening Nebraska’s cultural and creative economy.

🚀 Key Initiatives

  • Professional Theatre Training
    • Intensive program featuring rehearsals, technical training, and masterclasses with industry professionals.
    • Expanded curriculum to include audition prep, portfolio development, and career pathways.
  • Community Engagement & Performances
    • Free public performances at Gene Leahy Mall’s 4th of July celebration, reaching over 11,000 community members.
    • New partnerships with Omaha Performing Arts, Omaha Symphony, and local theaters to provide field trips, mentorship, and industry exposure.

📈 Impact Goals

  • Develop stronger pathways into the arts through partnerships with local theaters and performing arts organizations.
  • Grow public performances to increase accessibility and exposure for young artists.
  • Enhance UNO’s reputation as a hub for theatre education and professional training.
