General Education Assessment

  1. UNO
  2. General Education
  3. Faculty
  4. General Education Assessment

Units must provide evidence of continuous assessment of General Education program outcomes. Continuous is defined for this purpose as assessment of appropriate outcomes during every semester in which the course is offered. Failure to provide evidence of continuous assessment may result in the course being removed from the General Education curriculum.

Why Assessment?

  • To develop better courses for our students.
  • To ensure the General Education Courses are appropriate for the foundation of individual programs.
  • To improve the General Education Program through internal, rather than external feedback.
  • To illustrate departments' needs by gathering evidence for the programs.

The General Education committee would like to encourage as many faculty as possible who are teaching General Education courses to assess the outcomes using Canvas and the provided common rubrics.

Assessing outcomes in Canvas with common rubrics will provide more detailed student-level assessment data, and is potentially an easier and more sustainable model for many faculty and departments.

Departments/courses that choose to move in this direction will also have the option of submitting a more limited assessment report when they are on the General Education assessment cycle.
