Yusuf Khan
- President/Regent
- Running Mate: Megan Dean
Additional Information
Why are you running for Student Government?
There's so much that can be done to improve the opportunities and outcomes for students through Student Government and I truly believe that as Student Body President/Regent I would advocate for the students directly and move to quickly address issues like parking, student involvement, and more while doing my best to be available to students to hear their concerns.
As Student Body President I would represent the student body and I personally think that I would represent the students to the best of my abilities. Concerns that students have need action taken on them much sooner than when they reach a tipping point of outrage as seen through the eventual revival of the Parking Waiver.
I would make sure to act quickly, efficiently and no matter what listen and serve as the voice to support students on issues whether it be parking, fraternity/sorority recruitment, or how mental health resources on our university have been limited.
Which issue do you think should be changed or improved on campus?
If elected, Megan and I will take action on building a more sustainable campus, providing an inclusive environment for learning and activities, and representing the students on the issue of parking at UNO.
We recognize the impact we have on our environment, and we want UNO to be an example of what a sustainable and environmentally-friendly campus can be. We plan on improving access to composting, and finding sustainable alternatives to disposable products across campus.
We will ensure that all students and organizations have a voice. Additionally, we want to support the large portion of the student body that is commuter students. We believe that distance from campus should not prevent students from having a great experience at UNO.
We also will encourage Student Government to collaborate with student organizations to complete projects and solve problems, while advocating for improved mental health programs. Parking at UNO is a problem. There's no question about it. Many students have been vocal about the state of parking on our campus, and given the lack of response to these concerns it is clearly time for change! We plan on expanding the waiver policy, removing predatory booting and towing, and reducing ticket prices.
What makes you qualified to sit on Student Government?
I've served as a Student Senator since my successful campaign for a seat in the College of Arts and Sciences last April. In my time in Student Senate I've worked to recognize support for Dreamers, DACA, and TPS recipients, worked both with hundreds of students and administration to bring back the old waiver system for parking, and spearheaded various sustainability efforts on our campus from the Pollinator Garden to current projects for Earth Week along with supporting composting on campus.
Outside of Student Government I've served on the Mayor's Millennial Advisory Committee in Omaha, advanced the interests of students through the NU Advocacy program, and am also involved in a variety of organizations on campus ranging from International Student Buddy Program, Indian Student Association, to Campus Democrats.
I think that my experience within Student Government and my leadership in other organizations such as Campus Democrats, MSA, and other organizations will allow me to draw on a wide background of experiences to lead the student body effectively.
