Additional Information
Why are you running for Student Government?
My involvement in Student Government began when I joined the Freshman Leadership Council (FLC) my first year on campus. Through my participation in FLC I learned more about the impact Student Government has on campus and met many great Senators whose steps I knew I would want to follow because they had accomplished many great things.
The passion I witnessed led me to run for a Senator position last year. Since having done so, I have taken on projects that have stemmed from the same passion past Senators had demonstrated and I have also had the opportunity to connect to great resources around campus. I want to use my experiences as a former FLC member and current student Senator to pursue the role of Vice President and be intentional in the work I would accomplish.
Using the experiences I have gained and connections I have built, I would want to continue to take on big, important projects and put energy into crafting an even stronger FLC.
Which issue do you think should be changed or improved on campus?
One issue I think there is room to improve upon on campus is the way in which we approach diversity and inclusion. I think we recognize the diversity on campus but in terms of how we interact with it to ensure all students feel supported and included, I think we can do better.
One way we can begin to improve in this area is by building better means of communication between students and administration so students are not left out of important conversations and feel like their perspectives do not matter. Another way in which this issue can begin to be addressed is by creating a Diversity and Inclusion Committee within Student Government so we are constantly having meaningful conversations on issues that affect students on a daily basis and that together we can look for ways to address.
I think the future of diversity and inclusion on UNO's campus revolves on being intentional in how we incorporate the diversity that exists into conversations that matter and that need to be had.
What makes you qualified to sit on Student Government?
I have served in several leadership positions in student organizations across campus all of which make me feel prepared to take on the role of Student Body Vice President. However, aside from my leadership experience, my appreciation for UNO leads me to want to improve the areas we are not strong in so we can get to where I know we can be.
I am eager to make the changes needed so we have a campus that prioritizes serving all students and I have the motivation to work towards that happening. I enjoyed working with other Senators during my time as a Senator for the College of Education and look forward to continuing to build those relationships that make SG-UNO strong, and as a result better able to represent its constituents. I would use that same energy to encourage FLC members to find something they are passionate about and incorporate it into the future they see for themselves.
I think having had the opportunity to be in Freshman Leadership Council and serve as a Senator and Committee Chair has helped me feel qualified to seek this position.
